Job Description
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Gains a thorough understanding of functional requirements for new business intelligence requests (reports, dashboards, etc.).  Works with Business Analysts, customers, and/or requestors to understand and clarify requirements and translate into technical solutions for a working product;

    • Designs, develops, and performs testing of reports, dashboards and other business intelligence artifacts and functionality, primarily within the Cognos Business Intelligence software environment;

    • Applies and adheres to best practices in design and coding to reduce errors and ensure robustness and efficiency of work products;

    • Works to identify, troubleshoot and remediate data, performance, or other technical problems; 

    • Performs user support and issue resolution; 

    • Ensures work product satisfies internal compliance policies and are HIPAA compliant;

    • Develops and documents technical requirements and solutions;

    • Participates in design and code reviews;  

    • Documents requirements and maintain design documentation;

    • Adopts new techniques and technologies;

    • Assists with mentoring and training of less experienced team members as needed.

    Supervisory Responsibilities        

    No supervisory responsibilities.

    Client Responsibilities

    This is an internal and external client facing position that requires excellent customer service skills and interpersonal communication skills (listening/verbal/written).  One must be able to; manage difficult or emotional client situations; Respond promptly to client needs; Solicit client feedback to improve service; Respond to requests for service and assistance from clients; Meet commitments to clients.

    Qualifications

    Education and/or Experience                                            

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent combination of work experience and education) along with 2+ years’ related business intelligence, report development, data modeling and analysis. Experience working with Cognos BI required.  Prior healthcare or Pharmacy Benefit Management industry experience a plus.

    Computer Skills / Technical Skills - Demonstrable skills required in the following areas:

    • Cognos 10 (Report Studio, Query Studio)
    • Good working knowledge of SQL      
    • Proficient with data query tools (Golden32, Toad, etc.)
    • Basic knowledge of data modeling principles and tools (ERwin, Toad Data Modeler, etc.)
    • Good working knowledge of relational databases 
    • MS Office Suite

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Advanced training: Cognos BI – Report Author, Framework, and Administration. Cognos BI Certifications preferred.

    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with emphasis on translating technical concepts to non-technical audiences.Outstanding numeric, verbal, written, presentation, logic, and analytical skills. 
    • Familiarity with PBM business model (plans, programs, and practices) as well as pharmaceutical practices (nomenclature, medications) helpful.

    Reasoning Ability                                                    

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Mathematical Skills                                                 

    Ability add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure.  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    Work Location

    This position must work on-site at the San Diego Headquarters for purposes of providing adequate support to internal clients; being available for face-to-face interactions and coordination of work with other employees, colleagues, clients, or vendors; as well as for facilitation of quick and effective decisions through collaboration with stakeholders.  Remote work is not an option for these purposes.

    Working Hours

    This is a non-exempt position requiring the incumbent to be able to work overtime from time to time in order to get the job done.  Therefore, one must have the ability to work nights, weekends or on holidays as required.  This may be changed at any time to meet the needs of the business.  The typical working hours for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

    Travel

    This position may require occasional domestic travel and attendance maybe required at various local conferences and meetings.
