We are seeking a highly motivated Summer Intern to join our AEM Research and Development team. This internship will focus on data analysis using our lightning data, providing valuable insights to support innovation and development in atmospheric and environmental monitoring.


As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced scientists, gaining hands-on experience in data processing, visualization, and statistical analysis. Your work will contribute to improving our understanding of lightning patterns, enhancing predictive models, and supporting real-world applications to help make our world a safer and more prosperous place.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and interpret lightning data to extract meaningful patterns and insights.
  • Develop and apply statistical methods and machine learning techniques for data analysis.
  • Create visualizations, dashboards, and reports to communicate findings effectively.
  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers to support ongoing projects.
  • Assist in data cleaning, transformation, and validation to ensure accuracy.
  • Conduct literature reviews on relevant lightning science and data analytics techniques.
  • Present research findings to the team and potentially contribute to publications or internal reports

Requirements
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Atmospheric Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with Python for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Matplotlib, Seaborn, Tableau, or Power BI).
  • Understanding of statistical analysis and machine learning concepts.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with geospatial data analysis or GIS tools (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS).
  • Knowledge of lightning physics, meteorology, or environmental science.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) for handling large datasets.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems


Additional Information:

  • This is a remote opportunity that can be done from anywhere in British Columbia, Canada.
  • Full-time, paid summer 2025 internship
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization. F-1 visa holders with Optional Practical Training (OPT) who will require H-1B status, TNs, or current H-1B visa holders will not be considered. H1-B and green card sponsorship is not available for this position.

This position is not eligible for benefits.


Canadian Compensation Range: A reasonable estimate of the current salary range for this position is $18.50 - $24.00 CAD per hour. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. AEM considers a wide range of factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education, licensure and certifications, key skills as well as other market and business considerations when extending an offer. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled.
