Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) seeks a talented and goal-oriented individual to join our team supporting NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The selected candidate will work closely with the NASA Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) team. The NASA OMPS team is responsible for assessing the performance, and maintaining the calibration, of the OMPS sensors and providing L1B products for use by the science team and the outside community. SSAI is the prime contractor for this project and is looking for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Research Scientist to join our instrument calibration efforts. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support instrument characterization, both pre-launch and postlaunch.
  • Perform routine instrument trending and share results in a timely manner.
  • Lead investigations into any anomalies detected in satellite telemetry, calibration data and the Earth view responses, employing a systematic approach to identify and evaluate root causes and mitigation.
  • Improve calibration algorithms and data processing codes for remote sensing applications, as well as develop innovative research studies, for example by employing AI and Machine Learning. 
  • Present key findings in Team meetings and document the same in the form of technical documents such as Memos, ATBDs etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • MS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematical Sciences or other equivalent sciences and engineering disciplines with experience in satellite remote sensing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Proficiency in data analysis and systems analysis tools and techniques, using Python programming.
  • Experience using Unix/Linux.
  • Demonstrated availability to work well in a team environment.
  • Solid communication skills, both oral and written.
  • US citizenship / permanent residency required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong programming skills in multiple programming languages such as Fortran 90, IDL, and Python
  • Experience managing and interacting with SQL databases.
  • Knowledge in configuration management applications such as Gitlab, SubVersion (SVN)

The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
