This is what you will do:
· The Bioinformatics Intern is a member of the Bioinformatics Data Sciences (BDS) team based in Boston.
· The Bioinformatics Intern performs all responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, and regulations.
· The Bioinformatics Intern supports the BDS team to achieve our vision of ‘Through our people, Alexion Country RQA OpEx are dedicated to achieving our aspiration of ‘Delighting Our Customers’ by enabling the business to continually supply on time, in full, at the right price, products and services that are local market regulatory and Alexion Quality System compliant’. This is achieved through the execution of our strategies upon which our goals are built.
You will be responsible for:
· Work as part of the BDS team to conduct research on the characterization of rare diseases based on available datasets in the public domains, both in the rare and the common disease areas.
· Support the BDS team to execute key projects in support of the achievement of our overall strategy, including but not limited to:
o To identify the less studied rare diseases that lack of having many associated information (e.g., genomics, symptoms).
o To design models capable of learning from rare or non-rare diseases to characterize the identified less studied rare diseases (inductive predictive models).
o Drug-disease association learning.
o To implement a proof of concept for assessing the possibility of using AI and inductive learning in the context of revealing the mechanisms of action behind rare diseases.
· Other activities as maybe requested by the BDS leadership.
You will need to have:
· In the progress of completing a Ph.D. or equivalent in data science or computer science or a related discipline.
· Good knowledge and experience with network science, graph machine learning, inductive learning, and Python.
· Have a track of publications in the GraphML or bioinformatics areas.
· Demonstrated decision making, problem solving and project management skills.
· Technical writing skills are required.
· Good accuracy and attention to detail.
· Planning and organizing skills are required and the ability to adjust to changing priorities.
· Excellent interpersonal skills are required, as is the ability to communicate well, both verbally and written.
· The individual in this position is expected to represent Alexion Pharmaceutical interests, objectives and policies and culture in a responsible and professional manner.
· The person in this position will receive supervisory direction on all routine and non-routine activities. Routine activities will be unsupervised as training and competency develops.
· The position requires the individual to work collaboratively with colleagues, peers, and managers.
We would prefer for you to have:
· Understanding of inductive learning and experience with graph machine learning.
· Experience with handling networked data, especially in the biological domains.
· An understanding of target identification using network biology and computational approaches.
