The Strategic Missions and Technologies (SMT) division focuses on incubating next-generation technology solutions with transformative potential for the future of cloud computing, including engineering and research for advanced (Artifical Intelligence (AI) to accelerate scientific discovery and industry-leading quantum computing. The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) office within SMT develops operational prototypes and demonstrations of AI for customer-driven use cases and partners with SMT product teams to turn our prototypes into scalable products. We have a relatively small, focused, and tech-forward team that enables our division’s adoption of new capabilities, providing a bridge to innovation inside and outside of Microsoft. 

We are seeking a Software Engineer who can accelerate our efforts to deliver advanced AI techniques to further scientific discovery. An ideal candidate is highly collaborative, comfortable working on complex problems, and passionate about delivering solutions. Core competencies include cloud service development, scalability engineering, and C# development. Familiarity with the Azure platform, experience with distributed systems, cloud-based AI workloads, and security best practices are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Design and Implement AI-Driven Services: Develop and optimize AI-driven services, ensuring they meet both technical standards and user expectations. 

• AI Quality Enhancement: Implement and refine processes to ensure the highest quality of AI outputs, focusing on accuracy, reliability, and performance. 

• Metrics and Customer Insights: Translate telemetry and logging data into actionable insights to refine and enhance service offerings. 

• Operational Issue Management: Proactively handle operational issues as they arise, providing timely resolutions and maintaining service integrity while applying those learnings to prevent future issues. 

• Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning, incorporating cutting-edge techniques and technologies into ongoing projects.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
• OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.
• Experience developing AI applications
• Experience with AI assisted development tools

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
