We focus every day on building the foundation for tomorrow and creating a workplace that embraces differences, values flexibility, and is aligned to our purpose-driven and future-focused work. We offer a highly collaborative, caring team environment with a strong focus on learning and development, recognition for your individual contributions, and a variety of benefit options for you to choose from. What you'll do

We expect that you bring enthusiasm and are eager to study complex topics such as generative AI and language development. During your internship, you will help our team with the development of our GenAI Use-Cases, including setting up experiments with new or different models, benchmarking your developments and analyzing the results. You will then actively take part in the development cycle, trying to mitigate the identified problems, by improving pieces of the whole data pipeline.
The following tasks are currently available:
Benchmarking

  • Develop a Mutation Testing Benchmark based on an internal POC, allowing us to benchmark models for Unit Test generation.
  • Develop or adapt a completely new benchmark for our benchmarking suite, allowing us to test model performance in a broader range of scenarios.

Context Injection / Prompt Optimization

  • Extend our kernel-based context retrieval and prompt optimization API to include additional relevant resources, setup experiments, arrange trainings and benchmark and analyze your results in a scientific manner.
  • Explain Code
  • Extract Knowledge Transfer Documents (KTD) from an S/4 System, analyze it, and prepare it for model training.
  • Code Prediction
  • Extend our Code Prediction use-case to the RESTful ABAP Programming Model (RAP), allowing for predictions within RAP objects such as determinations, associations and validations.

Linter (SLIN)

  • Build a discriminative SLIN Classifier, which is able to categorize SLIN Check results and detect False-Positives. This will reduce support overhead for our team and colleagues, as well as our customers.
  • Build a support tool using generative models, which is able to provide solution suggestions for SLIN check errors.
  • Code Translation
  • Build a code translator using generative models, which is able to translate common languages such as Java or Python into ABAP Code.
  • Our topics can be explored at various depths and levels of difficulty. Whether you are looking for a position as a working student, an intern, or for a thesis, we will find the right topic for you. Just let us know your interests and strengths.

What you bring

  • Student (f/m/d) at a university or college
  • Be a team player
  • You should have experience in programming and software engineering. Optimally you've already gathered experience in developing C/C++, Rust, ABAP or Python.
  • Conversational English and German in speech and writing is mandatory
  • Eager to learn and work on complex topics
  • Able to work in a self-organized fashion on scientific tasks
  • Provide evidence of your knowledge

Learning & Development Opportunities
You will be able to strengthen your programming skills and work on complex cutting edge topics. Depending on the concrete task, you can learn about:

  • Generative AI, including models, benchmarking, data preparation, problems etc.
  • Rust, ABAP, Python, C/C++
  • ABAP Kernel & Compiler
  • Scientific Methods

Meet your team

The ABAP Language Team develops the ABAP programming language, the ABAP compiler, and the ABAP runtime within the application server. It is the language of most SAP business applications, with millions of internal and external developers and the heart of the ABAP Cloud.
Our work encompasses the development and maintenance of the ABAP Kernel, Compiler, Exception Handling, Static Code Analysis, Security Checks, and Code Completion. In addition to these core functionalities, we are pioneering two AI-driven ABAP use-cases: Code Prediction and Code Explain.

  • Code Prediction: This feature assists ABAP developers by providing intelligent, context-specific code suggestions within our custom IDE.
  • Code Explain: Designed to help developers understand unfamiliar ABAP code, this tool breaks down code snippets piece-by-piece, relating each part to business contexts for better comprehension.

We are a team of 12 developers, most of them working on our AI use-cases on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, we work closely together with several teams across the AI landscape to bring our AI use-cases to market.
Join us and be part of a team driving innovation in ABAP development.

The team is based in Walldorf and we mainly work in the Walldorf Time Zone. Since some of us are in the office every day, you don't need to worry about being alone and have no one to talk to in the office. We don't have designated office days, but the days with the most colleagues in the office are Tuesday - Thursday.

Your set of application documents should contain a cover letter, a resume in table form, school leaving certificates, certificate of enrollment, current university transcript of records, copies of any academic degrees already earned, and if available, references from former employers (including internships). Please also describe your experience and skills in foreign languages and computer programs / programming languages.
This is a SAP global, strategic, paid working student position that provides students with opportunities to find purpose in their careers.
