We are looking for a Manager, Strategic Data.

 

Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Toronto, London, and Winnipeg.

This position requires Reliability Status security clearance. This is a personnel security status that is required before an employee can gain access to Protected B information, assets or work sites as outlined by the Government of Canada website. 

 

Reporting to AVO, AI & Data Analytics, the Manager, Strategic Data will be responsible for leading a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative group of Data Analysts to ensure accurate data provisioning, processing, modeling and BI development.

The ideal candidate uses analytics capabilities and business mindset to convert insights into strategic opportunities for Canada Life’s Advisor Solutions, Advisor practice development & talent and financial solutions centre. They will work closely with business leaders, Finance and other data-oriented teams to support and implement high-quality, data-driven decisions using advanced data modeling, predictive modeling, BI development and analytical techniques to interpret key findings from company data and leverage these insights into initiatives that will support business outcomes.

 

You are a hands-on coach who will draw upon all your experiences in data analytics and insight to lead this newly formed team to create value in data driven decision making.

 

What you will do:

  • Build, develop and maintain data/advanced models, KPIs, BI tools/dashboards and data pipelines that support key business decisions

  • Lead cross-functional analytics projects using advanced data modeling and analysis techniques to discover insights that will guide strategic decisions and uncover optimization opportunities

  • Coach a team of senior data analysts, set operational team direction and partner to execute on common goals and challenge analytical thinking and methodologies

  • Act as a point of contact for analytics initiatives including partnering with enterprise and business analytics teams to build understanding of big data and advanced analytics capabilities

  • Ensure team collaboration with business and tech partners on business problems/issues and provide fact-based analytical advice that aligns to strategy and drives value

  • Collaborate with business partners to shape and prioritize projects, and build presentation of findings for executive leaders

  • Manage analytics team’s workload, assigning projects based on capabilities and needs

  • Organize and manage the end-to-end analytics initiatives/projects through effective management resources an effective communication with data owners and business partners

What you will bring:

  • Strong experience with a broad range of statistical programming languages, applications and data environments (e.g., R, Python, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, SQL Server, Azure and Databricks)

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent - MMA or MBA is considered an asset

  • 7+ years of relevant work experience in various data disciplines, including insights, statistical modeling, machine learning, data engineering and visualization

  • 3+ years of direct people leadership experience

  • Ability to mentor and guide employees at varied points in their careers

  • Liaise with business partners to conduct effective discussions on project requirements, data specifications, priority, and timeline to ensure timely and accurate deliveries

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with experience in relating complex concepts to non-technical users, including presentation and storytelling with data

  • Visual design expertise with a solid understand of the best practices around dashboard and visual perception

  • Experience within the Insurance or Financial Services sector would be an asset

  • Executing analytics initiatives of varied size and complexity that may involve descriptive analytics to deliver reporting and BI capabilities or predictive analytics techniques to deliver advanced analytics use cases

The base salary for this position is between  $84,900.00 - $155,700.00 annually.  This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).  If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
