Research Statistician I., Psychometrics   

College Board – Learning and Assessment  

Location: Fully remote.

About the Team    

The Psychometrics Team supports College Board in serving more than seven million students a year as they prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success. We provide our partners with measurement solutions that set the standard for quality, efficiency, and innovation through operational excellence and research leadership that advances the field of Psychometrics and supports College Board’s mission of access and equity in education. We are a 35+ person core team of Psychometricians and Research Statisticians that collaborate deeply with other departments and divisions including, but not limited to Assessment Design & Development, College Readiness Assessments, Advanced Placement & Instruction, State & District Partnerships, and Technology.   

 

About the Opportunity  

You will contribute to supporting core operational tasks by engaging in routine statistical analysis projects for College Board Assessment Programs (Advanced Placement Suite, ACCUPLACER, CLEP, and SAT Suite of Assessments). Your responsibilities will include conducting data analyses, interpreting results, and preparing reports to inform decision-making processes. You will collaborate closely with psychometricians and other research statisticians to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our assessments, leveraging your expertise in statistical methodologies and software. You will also play an important role in designing and implementing modern technology solutions for psychometric analyses including developing and maintaining software tools, automating data processing workflows, and ensuring the robustness and scalability of our systems. 
 

In this role, you will:  

Perform Statistical Analysis and Data Management  (60%) 

  • Undertake statistical analyses using both internal and external data as assigned. 

  • Produce tables, graphical displays, and data aggregations for internal and external use. 

  • Write queries/programs and generate reports representing a variety of formats. 

  • Work with a variety of data files representing multiple aggregation levels and formats. 

  • Develop more efficient procedures in the fulfillment of these analyses that may include developing stored procedures/programs and/or database solutions. 

  • Organize and reformat data for use in specialized statistical software, manipulate statistical analysis outputs for research reports, and provide personalized data from various sources to research scientists and psychometricians. 

 

Participate in and Promote  Systems Development  Efforts (35%) 

  • Contribute to the design and development of prototype software solutions for statistical and psychometric analyses. 

  • Lead and contribute to the development and maintenance of new analysis programs including but not limited to item and test analyses, security analysis, standard setting, and reporting.  

  • Test and validate existing programs to ensure accuracy, performance, and efficiency.  

  • Contribute to visualizing analysis results of assessment data. 

Contribute to Psychometric Research  (5%) 

  • Assume responsibility in the fulfillment of large-scale, strategically important research and analysis projects representing collaborations with state departments of education and other organizations. 

  • Design and implement QC procedures on all statistical analyses. 

  • Support work surrounding aligning external student data to internal College Board assessment data. 

  

About You 

You have:  

  • M.S. in Statistics,  Data Science, or other quantitative discipline  

  • Demonstrated proficiency with modern programming, cloud computing, web-based tools, and Python libraries (SciPy, NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib) for scientific computing, data processing, and visualization. 

  • Experience with version control tools (e.g., GitHub), cloud storage services (e.g., AWS S3), data science tools (e.g., Shiny, Tableau), and developing SAS macros. 

  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., Amazon Redshift, MySQL)  

  • Demonstrated proficiency in designing and conducting statistical analyses and understanding complex algorithms. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with and understand cross-program data structure. 

  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment that emphasizes quality, rigor, adaptability, and critical thinking. 

  • Demonstrated research skills and expertise in methodology. 

  • Ability to translate general inquiries into analysis questions and tasks. 

  • Keen attention to detail. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • The ability to travel 1-2 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business. 

  • You are authorized to work in the United States.

The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $56,000 to $100,000. College Board differentiates salaries by location so where you live will narrow the portion of this range in which you can expect a salary.  

Your salary will be carefully determined based on your location, relevant experience, the external labor market, and the pay of College Board employees in similar roles. College Board strives to provide our best offer up front based on these criteria.
