About the role

The Lead Data Scientist T&S is responsible for leading the generation and delivery of machine learning and other advanced analytical solutions, with a key focus area to create trade recommendations or other tradable insights for Ampol’s Trading and Shipping business.

The role will combine hands on problem solving with responsibility for leadership of other technical team members and support for production models.

This position is a part of Ampol’s Data, Analytics and AI team, a centre of excellence for big data and advanced analytics within Ampol, and works in a cross functional product squad.

Key responsibilities

Business alignment

• Maintain a strong understanding of the Trading business context, data capabilities, Data product roadmap, business processes, risk management frameworks, and other related opportunities relating to Ampol’s Trading and Shipping business

Technical delivery

• Lead the development of new machine learning and analytics opportunities, from early exploration phase through to delivery and deployment, resulting in tradable insights and profit
• Individually develop high quality data science solutions for specified projects
• Engage business stakeholders to drive understanding and alignment on solutions
• Collaborate with product manager and data architecture to ensure extensible and reliable platforms and data products, which support the growth of analytics capabilities over time
• Maintain existing advanced analytics projects in production
• Work with vendors or Ampol IT to integrate advanced analytics into enterprise systems
• Ensure all work follows the data science process defined by data science manager

Team Operations Management

• Manage project workplans and delivery
• Champion the use of agile project and product management techniques in Data Science
• Ensure ongoing reliability and quality of productionised analytic solutions e.g. availability and scheduling, integration, change management, resource optimisation, documentation etc
• Management of team members, including on-the-job coaching, professional development, performance management, and administrative duties
• Ensure QA processes are met as defined by data science manager

Qualifications & experience

• Degree in Mathematics, Statistics and/or Machine Learning
• Software Engineering, Computer Science, Commerce
• 5+ years in technical capacity delivering machine learning and other advanced analytics projects
• Fluency in Python, Spark
• Familiarity with cloud platform capabilities supporting data science delivery with Azure experience preferred
• Familiarity with git flow and agile product development
• Experience working with Snowflake

Skills & Knowledge

• Demonstrated success delivering models supporting front-line trading teams with actionable trade strategies and measurable P&L impact
• Experience in developing novel data science solutions
• People and delivery management
• Experience working with large and unstructured data sets to enable model development
• Experience in software engineering and/or data engineering
• Prior experience in roles responsible for data science project origination, pre-sales, or consulting
• Familiarity with globally traded commodities and relevant analytics use cases
