About Hitachi ZeroCarbon
At Hitachi ZeroCarbon, we envision a zero-carbon future for society. We are a venture incubation engine which builds innovative end-to-end decarbonization businesses to accelerate the transition to a greener, more efficient world for our customers and society.
Hitachi ZeroCarbon’s mission is to build billion-dollar potential businesses in the green economy to claim Hitachi’s potential as a climate change innovator, and to deliver on our mission to contribute to society. We incubate and build high-tech growth ventures at the intersection of mobility, energy and digital, enabling Hitachi to play a pivotal role in leading the net-zero transition.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Lead Data Scientist that will specialise in energy system optimisation and can develop production grade code for active control of assets. The ideal candidate will drive the development of advanced optimisation models and algorithms to address complex energy system challenges, including demand forecasting, energy scheduling, and resource allocation. The role sits within the data science and analytics team but works closely across the technology team.
The data science and analytics team are at the core of Hitachi ZeroCarbon as a data-driven business. Our core objective is to develop data-driven technology that increases the value proposition of our product suite. The data science team sits within the technology function so you will be working with data scientists, data engineers, software developers, business analysts and technical architects.
Key Responsibilities
You will be curious, creative and innovative – experimenting and quickly prototyping ideas, failing fast and learning fast. You’ll take a commercial perspective to problem solving and be agile and flexible in your approach. You’ll thrive on collaboration – engaging with wider teams and business affairs. You’ll take accountability for your own deliverables and manage yourself based on outputs. And you will have a strong customer focus – making it simple for others and caring deeply about success for your customers and stakeholders.
Reporting directly to the Chief Data Scientist, your responsibilities will include:
Model Development: Design, develop, and implement advanced optimization models for energy systems, leveraging techniques such as linear programming, mixed-integer programming, and model predictive control.
Data Analysis: Perform exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for optimization within energy systems.
Algorithm Design: Create scalable algorithms to optimise energy consumption, production, and storage, ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory constraints.
Forecasting and Simulation: Develop predictive models and simulations to support decision-making, including energy demand forecasting and load shifting.
Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders, to identify requirements and translate them into actionable solutions.
Technical Leadership: Mentor team members and contribute to the overall technical strategy of the data science team.
Tool Development: Build and maintain tools and frameworks to facilitate optimisation and data analysis.
Performance Monitoring: Evaluate and improve the performance of deployed models and algorithms to ensure robustness and scalability
Skills & Experience:
Essential
3+ years proven experience as a data scientist working in the energy management industry
Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
Strong expertise in mathematical optimisation techniques (e.g., linear programming, mixed-integer programming).
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, and experience with optimisation libraries (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, PuLP, or Pyomo).
Solid understanding of energy systems, including grid management, renewable integration, and energy markets.
Experience writing SQL queries with a strong focus on efficiency for ETL applications
Good understanding of efficient data handling workflows
Experience working with time-series data and forecasting models.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable:
Energy management or electric vehicle charging domain knowledge
Experience working with containerised solutions in a microservices architecture.
Experience in human-centred design principles
Experienced working with Azure cloud services
