We started Marshmallow when we found out how unfair insurance prices are for people who move to the UK. All because the industry hasn’t given this huge cohort of people a second’s thought, and isn’t set up to price them properly.
We saw an opportunity to do things differently, so we made it our mission to back the ones who step outside the norm. Since we started, we’ve helped 100,000s of people get a fairer deal on their car insurance. Using technology, we serve people that are often overlooked by financial services companies, solving important problems for people who need it most.
We know there are millions of marginalised customers out there. And we know that they face unique problems that most companies aren’t even aware of. We believe that our future is helping these people by learning about their experiences, and building our company around their needs. And there are strong signs that there’s a need for a company like us. Earlier this year we hit profitability, which is a huge milestone, but the most exciting thing is that we’re only just getting started.
How we work
We’re really proud of the culture we’ve created. We push for progress every day, because we know that we’ll only hit big milestones by taking lots of smaller steps. We’re always open to helping our team mates, sharing our ideas, experience and knowledge to solve problems together. We take risks, think creatively and experiment relentlessly to meet our customer’s needs, and never pass blame when things go wrong. We encourage people at all levels to take ownership of their work, and to be bold in challenging how we do things. Everyone has a voice and the opportunity to make an impact.
And autonomy and ownership are only possible with clear direction. That’s why we collaborate to do in-depth planning twice a year, and make sure we leave with clear goals and objectives that flow from top to bottom. To make sure we’re as aligned as possible across functions, most of our work rolls up into four tribes; Acquisition, Retention, Claims and Pricing, Underwriting & Fraud. Each tribe has multiple teams embedded in it, working cross-functionally to do great work.
We’re so excited for all of the challenges up ahead, and we need more people to help us tackle them! If life at Marshmallow sounds like it could be for you, explore our culture handbook or read our blog to find out more.
About the RoleAs a Senior Cloud Engineer with a strong focus on cloud engineering at Marshmallow, you will report to our Staff Platform Engineer (who reports to the CTO). We are a small but impactful Cloud/Platform Engineering team, primarily supporting product engineering today. In this role, you will help us expand our capacity to support additional teams and company-wide initiatives.
You will play a pivotal part in shaping the future of our platform and infrastructure. This includes spearheading the growth of our ML Platform from around 20 models to hundreds within the next 12 months, and contributing to our broader goal of expanding from a single insurance product to multiple financial products.
You will join three other Cloud/Platform Engineers, collaborating closely with two MLOps Engineers to evolve our machine learning workflows. Your efforts will cover everything from building cost-effective CI/CD pipelines to guiding AWS account organisation and networking decisions that uphold security, observability, and self-serve principles.
This is a hybrid role, requiring three days per week in our London office near Old Street Station. In time, there is potential to progress into a Staff or Principal Cloud Engineer position as our infrastructure becomes more complex and our product range grows.
Your ResponsibilitiesCollaborate and Automate: Work with MLOps Engineers and Data Scientists to identify requirements, then build and refine tools for automated ML model development, testing, and deployment.
Elevate Operational Standards: Drive operational excellence by creating reusable components, applying best practices for CI/CD, and promoting robust observability, logging, and security.
Scale and Secure: Optimize AWS infrastructure performance, including cross-account networking, while championing security best practices and addressing vulnerabilities proactively.
Mentor and Lead: Share knowledge across teams, guiding major technical initiatives, and supporting other engineers in adopting cloud engineering best practices.
AWS & Networking: Expertise with AWS (IAM, VPCs, etc.), designing secure, scalable architectures.
Containers & Orchestration: Proficiency in ECS and Docker, with Kubernetes knowledge a strong plus.
Infrastructure as Code: Skill in Terraform (or similar) to manage resources and streamline deployments.
CI/CD & Automation: Experience implementing pipelines, ideally with TeamCity, Kotlin (optional but beneficial), and Python (e.g., Lambdas).
Observability: Familiarity with integrating logs, metrics, and alerts into production systems, especially using DataDog.
Team Enabler: Background in mentoring or coaching engineers, sharing technical expertise, and guiding architectural decisions.
ML Collaboration: Comfortable working closely with Data Scientists on ML workflows; SageMaker or data science exposure is a bonus, not a requirement.
We run hundreds of services on AWS Fargate, and are migrating from AppMesh to ECS Service Connect. We may explore Kubernetes in the future, so familiarity with container orchestration at scale is valuable.
Our rapid growth involves more ML models powering pricing, fraud detection, and other functions. Ensuring self-service capabilities, high-quality tooling, and adherence to best practices for Data Scientists is a key priority.
Overall, our team manages AWS infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines, focusing on developer experience and evolving our engineering culture. Recent projects include documenting processes, improving local development, and providing stronger support for product engineering.
