Vital builds software for care teams & patients, with a focus on the Emergency Room (ER) experience. We use AI/ML to transform the care experience, increase patient & staff satisfaction, and increase revenue for our clients. We provide hospitals with a modern UI and AI layer, which we are able to deploy within a matter of days.Vital is currently operating across more than 100 hospitals, integrated with over 30 healthcare systems, and is providing vital updates in care to over 1 million patients and loved ones across the United States. The future of healthcare is right here.
This Role
Vital serves millions of patients each year, with real-time updates on emergency, inpatient, and urgent care visits. To do this, we use AI to match personalised content. That content may be for lab results, medications, procedures/surgeries, conditions, diseases, insurance, and doctor/clinic information. It's a lot of data! Even more when you consider most is in English & Spanish, among 10+ languages Vital supports or will support soon. This data changes, sometimes monthly. And it comes in all sorts of formats: XML, JSON, APIs, PDFs.
This role is based in the Quality Team within our Engineering org and has the opportunity to grow over time into some front-end development or analytics if desired. The ideal candidate should be a spreadsheet master, handle regex parsing, know what XPaths are, be able to script, run command line jobs, and use tools like PostMan for ad hoc API requests and authentication.

We need someone to manage:

  • Data import and ingest. This requires Python, Node/Javascript, or other scripting.
  • Data downloads, some of which are manual, others are chron jobs on APIsData mappings. For example medications come in AHFS format, but we have mappings for RxNorm and National Drug Codes (NDC). Knowing cross-walks or spreadsheet VLOOKUPS is essential.
  • Data scrubbing. You have to know when there's missing data, and do sanity checks.
  • Management. This might be correcting data in spreadsheets with the help of medical staff, or using something like Retool.com to put a permissioned UX on top of frequently edited content.
  • Scraping. Use online tools like browse.ai or Octoparse to pull data from clients who are too busy to update us formally.
  • Augmentation. Use APIs to enrich sparse insurance data with new attributes, from an API.
  • You’ll also be able to discuss how compliance and security overlaps with data analytics.

What you'll bring with you

  • Curiosity and drive are important - you’ll be constantly improving and learning.
  • Proficiency in LLM’s with a preference for automation is highly regarded.
  • Scripting experience eg Python/Javascript.
  • Confident using online tools like browse.ai or Octoparse.

Engineering at Vital

  • Our engineers are responsible for maintaining and developing our customer-facing products, and internal tools that support them.
  • All of our infrastructure rests within the AWS cloud, with our preference being AWS Managed Services, allowing our engineers to build products rather than maintain servers.
  • We ingest and process millions of events from core healthcare systems using AWS Serverless technologies like Lambda, SQS, EventBridge, and Kinesis, as well as Databricks for our data engineering and analysis.
  • Code is deployed to production via CI/CD multiple times every day, with multiple layers of automated testing and code analysis in place.
  • Engineers build, maintain, and support shared services. As such, all of our engineering team (yes, including leadership) participate in our on-call roster.
  • Work is prioritised and delivered using a Kanban-style approach, and we iterate on our methodology as needed. Features are launched in phases, following validation with our end users, so we rely heavily on feature flags.
  • Our team has adopted asynchronous communication as our preferred form of working together. We eschew unnecessary meetings, write documentation, draft idea documents, and utilize the Slack "Do Not Disturb" functionality.

Benefits

  • Every team member at Vital gets to share in our success in the form of stock options.
  • We’ll provide you with the equipment you’ll need to work remotely or in a shared office space.
  • Annual L&D budget to support your career development & a stipend for your home office set up!
  • Employee Assistance Program to support your wellbeing.
  • Paid Parental Leave.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are important to us. Every team member must abide by our shared code of conduct. We believe this approach will help us attract and grow a diverse bunch of talented people that are supportive, calm, clear, empathetic, and results-oriented.
  • We prefer working smarter, not longer. You're not expected to put in wild hours, that's just not what we do.
  • We're constantly improving our systems and processes, and you'll be expected to continue to shape this as we journey together.
  • We’re working on problems which have a real impact on people’s lives. When we succeed, patients get better care.
