The Pre-doctoral Research Fellow (Junior Research Scientist) will assist faculty in the Finance department at NYU Stern on a variety of research activities, such as data analysis, data collection and aggregation, and textual parsing and analysis.

One half of the position will focus on important questions in international finance, in particular around debt markets. Research topics include emerging market debt dynamics, financial strategies of multinational firms, and global capital flows. The other half of the position will take place in the context of NYU Sterns’ Financial History Initiative, which aims to draw lessons from economic and financial history for important finance and economics question today. Research topics include bank regulation, firm bankruptcy rules, and mortgage design. The position is full-time and based in New York, with benefits, and includes opportunities to join the department’s seminar talks, brown bags, other activities of the department, and attend PhD courses in Finance. The appointment is for 2 years, subject to probationary review and an evaluation after year 1.

As part of the interviewing process, selected candidates will be asked to present a research paper and perform a coding task in Stata or R.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $50,440-$60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.   

Qualifications

This position is an especially good fit for someone planning to enter a PhD program in Economics or Finance in the future. The ideal applicant will have:

·      Completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree by summer 2025.

·      Strong experience with research in Economics or Finance

·      Strong experience with statistical software such as Stata and R.

·   Preferred additional experience in text parsing and analysis and/or machine learning techniques (Python, SQL, and/or C).

·      Ability to work independently, think critically, and solve problems.

·      Enthusiasm for research.
