Purpose
The Senior Manager provides advanced analytical expertise to manage the development, validation, monitoring, reporting and documentation of quantitative models that supports the investment process. This role lies at the exciting intersection of research, data science & machine learning, finance, and technology. Being an effective communicator is required to build a relationship of trust with key partners and senior management. A good balance between technical and business knowledge will be key to success. The position will report to the SVP, Chief Investment Officer, GWM and be responsible for conducting research, utilizing data to drive insights, and applying mathematical/statistical methods that will support the business to make better investment decisions, drive innovation and automate/optimize processes.
Accountabilities
• Use data analysis to develop robust quantitative investment framework that enhances investment decision-making and continually build, maintain and automate existing and new analytical tools.
• Identify, propose and collaborate on enhancements to existing processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness of our portfolio management capabilities.
• Prepare, analyze, and interpret advanced quantitative and statistical analysis to drive business decisions.
• Maintain/develop professional knowledge of techniques and developments in the field of quantitative analysis and share knowledge with business partners and senior management.
• Contributes to the design, enhancement and sustainment of all deliverables.
• Evaluate the conceptual soundness of the model methodology, reasonability of assumptions and reliability of inputs; Suitability and comprehensiveness of performance metrics and risk measures associated with the use of the model.
• Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine.
• Improves team performance, recognizes and rewards performance, coaches employees, supports their development, and manages poor performance.
• Operates at a group/enterprise-wide level and serves as a specialist resource to senior leaders and stakeholders.
• Ensures alignment between values and behavior that fosters diversity and inclusion.
• Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
• Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
• Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
• Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
Education / Experience
• Robust quantitative skills acquired through education in one of the following areas: Financial Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science & Engineering or Professional experience in the field.
• Familiarity with various modelling techniques – model development and validation; and Data preprocessing and visualization.
• Strong proficiency with Bloomberg, Excel, and/or statistical software (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, SQL)
• Understanding of quantitative investment research methods in a bond, credit or equity role is an asset.
