You’ll be joining our Floods and Droughts Research Infrastructure (FDRI: https://www.ceh.ac.uk/our-science/projects/floods-and-droughts-research-infrastructure-fdri) team, contributing to an exciting new digital infrastructure for hydrological research, working with catchment field teams, environmental scientists, and software systems developers.  

You will be supporting high-quality science by managing data from a range of sources and collating these into a common digital infrastructure, which is being developed by the FDRI team. This will make new and existing hydrological data much more accessible to researchers and the wider community, creating new opportunities for research to address floods and droughts in the future. 

You will be supporting several groups within the larger FDRI team by managing, organising, and tracking different types of data in various formats and stages of completeness. You will have the opportunity to build data products from beginning to end by collating, processing and publishing historical and current datasets.

Your main responsibilities will include:  

• Collating, curating and managing environmental datasets (with programming and databases).  
• Plotting and analysing data for effective quality assurance and control.  
• Troubleshooting and finding problems with the data.  
• Ensuring projects adhere to data management best practice for FAIR data, and produce accurate and reliable data products, including conformance to data standards.  
• Organising, utilising and enhancing data management documentation, procedures, and tools to track progress of datasets and digital products.  
• Communication between teams and to different audiences.  

  

This role suits someone who enjoys troubleshooting, documenting datasets clearly and comprehensively, and communicating technical topics to different audiences, for example non-specialists, scientists, and engineers.  

For the role of Hydrological Data Manager, we are looking for someone with:  

• A degree in a numerate subject (e.g. geography, environmental science, maths).  
• Experience of working within teams.  
• Experience of use, analysis, and management of environmental data. Knowledge of hydrology and hydrological data would be a distinct advantage.  
• Awareness of data management best practice and research data integrity.  
• Demonstrable programming skills. Experience of database systems would be beneficial but not essential.  
• Excellent written and communication skills with attention to detail.
