By building from the ground up we are able to entirely rethink both the middle and last mile, enabling us to reduce the number of miles driven to deliver each parcel, lower carbon emissions, and lower costs, all while channelling funds to community members.

At the same time, we’re fixing the last broken aspect of e-commerce for consumers: delivery. As shoppers, we should have complete control over when and how we receive our purchases, and we should be able to return unwanted items as easily as we ordered them. That’s why whenever you buy from a merchant powered by Relay, you’ll be able to reschedule your delivery at any time. And if you don’t like what you ordered, at the tap of a button we’ll send someone to pick it up.

To orchestrate this complex ballet, Relay relies on a wide range of technologies, from advanced routing and planning to sophisticated user experiences that guide our team members on the ground.

About the role

We are looking for Data Scientist Interns to join our dynamic team. You will have the opportunity to dive into real-world problems, enhancing Relay’s logistics efficiency through impactful data-driven projects. You will actively participate in one of the following exciting projects:

1. Route Duration Forecasting: Integrate external data sources and collaborate with the routing team to enhance forecasting models for route durations, parcel dimensions and operational planning.

2. Courier Value Segmentation: Develop a brand new model using unsupervised techniques to categorise couriers with respect to their engagement, reliability, quality and performance.

3. Routing Optimisation Utilise operational research and optimisation techniques on operations data to optimise route planning, improving efficiency and sustainability.

As a Data Scientist Intern at Relay, you can expect to:

• Gain hands-on experience in translating data science models into tangible business impacts.

• Work collaboratively with our Data Science, Engineering, Operations, and Product teams.

• Develop models and data products, from initial data exploration through to potential deployment.

• Have your work directly contribute to Relay’s mission of creating sustainable and efficient logistics solutions.

We are looking for candidates who have:

• Experience with Python and SQL.

• A foundational understanding of machine learning, statistical analysis, or operational research.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Interest in our business and in e-commerce / logistics.

• Enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and growth-oriented environment.
