Lead Data Engineer

Mō te tūranga | About the Role

The Lead Data Engineer not only provides expert domain knowledge and expertise in the area they are working in, but as a senior member of the squad, provides mentorship and guidance to others. They operate with greater scope within the service group, wider technology BU and with business stakeholders to ensure high levels of Service Delivery are maintained and an overarching focus on risk and compliance is always front of mind in the squad.

Communication, negotiation, collaboration and teamwork, and partnership / relationship building skills are key to achieving desired outcomes in this role. In particular to enable the delivery of great innovative banking products that continue to enhance our customers’ experience.

• Assesses and resolves vulnerabilities and patches, as well as undertakes upgrades of the relevant application.

• Ensure Information Technology Service Accreditation (ITSA) remains green for the Data Intelligence Platform (DIP) and ensures Service reliability.

• Supports internal and external audit requirements as required. 

• It provides rostered On Call Production Support for CAL (Critical Application).

• Translates logical designs into physical designs and produces detailed design documentation.

• Ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) for provision of the infrastructure are met, systems are kept up to date, well maintained and monitored.

• Sets local or team-based standards for programming tools and techniques, advises on their

• application and ensures compliance.

• As the lead, takes technical responsibility for all stages in the data engineering development process.

• Provides advice, guidance and assistance to less experienced colleagues as required.

• Initiates and monitors actions to investigate and resolve problems in platforms, systems and services.

• Works alongside Service Owners and Scrum Masters to prioritise project deliverables, and to negotiate with the stakeholders on technical matters.

• Provides expertise and support on use of methods and tools.

• Uses the tools and techniques for specific areas of release and deployment activities.

• Administers the recording of activities, logging of results and documents technical activity undertaken.

• May carry out early life support activities such as providing support advice to initial users.

• Relationships with internal stakeholders are strong and productive.

• Vendor management skills.

• Working and communicating with key external suppliers and third-party vendors to achieve desired outcomes for Westpac.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

• At least 7+ years experience as a Data Engineer, preferably in a large corporate environment

• Experience with Apache Ecosystem including HDFS and spark and hive, experience with terraform is essential and Snyk is preferred

• Able to review and recommend new development techniques and vendor products and make recommendations on the acquisition of advanced technology.

• Validate functionality and performance of new development projects within the corresponding application system.

• Diagnose and solve technical issued that may arise during the application life cycle.

• Participate in projects and planning sessions as required.

• Applies effective Quality Assurance and process improvement activities.

• Tertiary level qualifications in Computer Science, Business or an associated discipline.

• Certification for relevant technical and management disciplines.

• Able to mentor and develop teams.

• Experience in building working relationships with suppliers.

• Familiar with Agile ways of working
