SUMMARY

The Center for Digital Government named Charlotte one of the top five digital cities in the nation. Charlotte Water Technology provides executive-level leadership, delivers technology services to Charlotte Water and its partner agencies, and coordinates information technology initiatives across the organization to support, enhance and advance citizen service delivery. Charlotte Water Technology is a division of City of Charlotte Innovation & Technology and directly supports Charlotte Water.

Charlotte Water Technology is seeking a Data and Analytics Intern to support the development, governance, and execution of the Charlotte Water data and analytics program. This position works alongside our experienced data and analytics team to gain practical insights into business data, analyze trends, and support the development of data-driven strategies. The internship will provide the candidate with exposure to various aspects of the data analytics process, from data collection and cleaning to generating actionable insights for decision-makers.

Salary - $16/hr. - $22/hr. commensurate with grade level

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

Supports business intelligence operations and decision support systems through integrating and analyzing enterprise data sets across systems. Assist with data collection, cleaning, and preprocessing to ensure data quality and accuracy. Create visualizations, dashboards, and reports to communicate insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Perform data analysis using Excel, SQL, Python, R, or other analytics tools to identify key trends and patterns. Collaborate with team members to understand business goals and translate them into analytical requirements. Participate in business requirements gathering and documentation. Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas to improve analytical processes. Help with ad-hoc data-related projects as needed.

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES 

Knowledge of:

IT infrastructure and other technologies. Data warehouse practices, methodologies, and governance. Dimensional modeling. Data quality concepts. Business intelligence systems including analytics tools used for reporting and dashboards, foundational data warehouse management, data governance, business process improvement, and change management. SQL, PL/SQL, Python, and DAX.

Skill in:

  • Maintaining effective and appropriate working relationships.

  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature.

  • Analysis and troubleshooting.

Ability to: 

  • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Work independently with minimum direction.

  • Write technical documentation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Required Education and Experience 

  • Intern must be an undergraduate currently enrolled in a college or university

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Experience working in a Microsoft SQL Server environment. Experience working with Business Intelligence tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik. Familiarity with API development practices, including RESTful design, versioning, and basic authentication principles.

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university  leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental  and/or work assignment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
