Language requirement: English proficiency
Other requirements: Basic programming skills for bioinformatics such as R, Python, or equivalent.
Expected start date: March through August 2025.
Duration: 3 to 6 months.
Work arrangements: Remote work not allowed.
Requisite: The internship must be mandatory & done in the framework of the curriculum, for which an agreement must be signed between GSK, the student and the Educational Establishment.
Remuneration: according to Belgian legal requirements, the internship will not be paid. However, some expenses will be reimbursed.

Vx Digital Virology is an experienced team of data scientists that foster excellence in computer science, mathematics, statistics, and virology to conduct data-driven discoveries, enabling the research and development of modern viral vaccines. The Viral Computational Genomics team (VCG), as part of Vx Digital Virology, is bringing data science to scientists and viral vaccine projects to innovate, provide novel insights, and drive decision-making.
As a GSK intern, you will learn new skills and concepts in the field of molecular epidemiology and viral genomics and evolution by investigating and developing different methods to assess viral evolution and phylogeny. These activities will contribute to VCG’s analyses and computational pipelines, helping the team to deliver projects in data analytics. In addition to building new scientific knowledge, you will gain experience in research and development in industry, strategic objectives, and deadlines.
The day-to-day work will involve review of relevant literature to list tools of interest for virus detection in biological samples, definition of use cases, generation of appropriate in silico datasets for the evaluation of performance in virus detection, installation and use of the different tools to evaluate their performance, including the GSK developed pipeline, statistical analyses to rank the different tools, preparing presentations and reports. At the end of your internship, you will have contributed to the delivery of important analyses with impact in the development of viral vaccines.
B.S. or M.Sc. in Computer Sciences, Complex Systems, Mathematics and Physics, Biological and Systems Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Life Sciences, Genetics or equivalent
Interest in evolution and phylogenetic trees is a plus
Excellent communication skills, ability to simplify complex problems and communicate complex solutions in a simple and effective manner
Basic programming skills for bioinformatics such as R, Python, or equivalent
Strong problem-solving skills driven by curiosity
Good programming, data analytics, and modelling skills
