The opportunity
The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) is building one of the world’s largest science facilities, with next-generation telescopes driving astrophysics research, innovation, and skills development. With collaboration across a dozen countries, the SKA project is one of the most ambitious science and engineering efforts of this century. The Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) plays a key role in this mission by supporting global SKA science communities, enabling new discoveries through advanced data processing.
As part of this effort, AusSRC is seeking a skilled software engineer to join our team in Perth, Western Australia. With the SKA now under construction, the development of the SKA Regional Centre Network (SRCNet) has entered an exciting phase. Astronomers will rely on SRCNet to access and process vast telescope data, making this network essential to the SKA’s success.
We are looking for someone with experience in production-quality software, particularly in deployment and operations within a cloud ecosystem. Skills in web service development, containerisation, and orchestration technologies are highly valued. While a scientific research background is beneficial, it’s not essential. Strong collaboration and communication skills are vital, as this role involves working with global partners and may require occasional travel. We offer a flexible, inclusive work environment that accommodates time zone differences where needed.
Your duties will include:
-
Contribute to the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of software for SRCNet data centres, including interoperability solutions.
-
Work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve operational issues, ensuring system reliability and performance.
-
Regularly communicate progress and demonstrate software functionality.
-
Develop and maintain documentation on infrastructure, processes, and workflows.
-
Perform other duties as required.
Location: Perth, Western Australia
Salary: AU$114k - AU$123k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Indefinite
Reference: 98574
To be considered you will need:
Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
-
Tertiary or graduate qualification in Science, Computing, or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
-
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to develop coherent solutions for complex challenges.
-
Ability to manage workloads and meet targets in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
-
Proven ability to build effective relationships with engineers and scientists from diverse backgrounds, communicate ideas clearly, and foster collaboration.
-
Experience with or a strong commitment to Agile practices, prioritizing end-user focus and pragmatic decision-making.
Desirable
- Proficiency in programming languages (such as Python) and source code management tools.
- Experience with OpenStack or similar cloud environments (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure).
- Familiarity with internet technologies, including web servers and database servers.
- Exposure to High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, including workload schedulers such as Slurm or PBS Pro, or container orchestration environments.
- Proven experience managing computer systems in a research environment.
- Experience with automation, testing, or provisioning tools such as Ansible, Puppet, MAAS, or Jenkins.
- Demonstrated success in designing and deploying new services or platforms for researchers or clients.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices, AI technologies, and Agile methodologies.
