Position Overview:

The Sutter Health Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer (CAIO) will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s data-driven strategy, fostering innovation, and driving growth through advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). This position reports to the SVP, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) and is responsible for planning, providing strategic direction, and overseeing the execution and implementation of strategy, plans, and policies, and leads governance for data science, AI, and automation functions of Sutter Health.

The incumbent has a strong record as a practicing clinician, demonstrating Data Science and AI leadership, a deep understanding of data-driven clinical strategies, and the ability to drive business innovation through data. Under the guidance of the CDO and the executive leadership, they collaborate closely with other leadership roles, including the Chief Health Information Officer, the Chief Innovation Officer, Physician Informaticists, Chiefs-of-Staff, and operations and service-line leaders to evaluate, tune and implement Data Science and AI solutions, leveraging AI/ML techniques and deep knowledge of EPIC to support clinical best practice. The CAIO enables a Data Science and AI strategy of collaboration by cross-functional teams, working across the organization on the strategy, use case exploration, and deployment of AI driven capabilities.

The CAIO builds and leads Sutter’s growing team of data scientists, leveraging their experience to accelerate development and adoption of high-value and meaningful healthcare AI solutions. This Data Science team and AI is responsible for algorithmic governance, evaluating, validating, and supporting the next generation of solutions that will enhance clinical and patient outcomes. The strategies the team utilizes are related to fields of study including Machine Learning modeling and statistical simulation, Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision, Deep Learning and neural networks, Behavioral Learning and analysis, and Performance Predictions. The CAIO enables the Data Science and AI team to draw new and unique observations through causal inference and machine learning, enhancing the efficacy and value of clinical care, and deriving insights for Sutter’s patients, providers, and leadership.

Job Description:

Education/Certification: 

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field. 

• Board certified clinician required; California physician licensure eligible. 

 

Experience: 

• Proven experience (10+ years) in data science, AI, and analytics, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. 

• Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and programming languages (e.g., Python, R). 

 

Knowledge: 

• Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, data modeling, and statistical analysis. 

• Knowledge of supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques.

• Knowledge of techniques for processing and analyzing human language data. 

 

Skills:  

• Expertise in languages like Python, R, SQL, and familiarity with Java or Scala. 

• Deep understanding of machine learning algorithms, frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and AI technologies.

• Skills in visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) to communicate data insights effectively.

Pay Range is $0.00 to $0.00 / hour. The posted Pay Range is $216.35 to $312.50 / hour.

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package. ​
