The Data Analyst I assists in developing, preparing, analyzing and loading data into the database/data warehouse while preserving data integrity. With innovative-driven projects, this position will help in developing new processes, reports, and best practices in order to drive business objectives, increase revenue and operational efficiencies.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Compile, package, present and discuss analysis and insights with customers in an impactful narrative or visual form.
2. Develop reports, metrics and dashboards to help the business communicate performance and deliver insights to management while monitoring data quality issues (within Workday and other systems as assigned).
3. Proactively address customer needs and support the Nelnet Management Team as a primary customer.
4. Collect, organize and use data to reach meaningful conclusion. Receive data from relevant sources and tools providing data reports for management.
5. Verify, extract, transform, append, and standardize data from disparate data types and sources to meet system/business requirements.
6. Create and monitor reports to determine data quality and completeness, identify critical issues, trends and opportunities.
7. Pinpoint and analyze relevant data to support business initiatives (e.g. profitability, performance and variance analysis).
8. Communicate key findings with other team members through oral or written presentations.
9. Design, develop, and continue to maintain process improvements to automate current and future processes.
10. Assist in developing new data warehouse.
11. Create and maintain databases and data systems.
12. Participate in data quality control and validation.
13. Identify data definition inconsistencies and presents recommendations to management.
14. Document, report and follow through on recommendations from projects.
15. Provide consistent and timely updates.
16. Assist with completion of projects affecting multiple departments.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (i.e., Statistics, Mathematic, Computer Science, Data Science, Finance, Accounting, etc.).
EXPERIENCE:
1. 1+ years’ experience in analytical/quantitative role or equivalent education.
2. 1+ years’ experience in accounting/finance/data analytics preferred.
3. Experience in Education/Payments/Finance industry preferred.
COMPETENCIES – SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
1. Ability to interpret the data and analyze for trends, correlations, and other key characteristics.
2. Thorough and timely follow up on all open issues.
3. Technical skill-set to include:
• intermediate Excel competency;
• competency with extracting, manipulating, querying data in a variety of database systems;
• familiarity with data mapping, cleansing, and editing as well as Extract, Transform, and Load processes (ETL); and
• familiarity with database tools and query languages such as MS Access, SQL, Python, R, SAS, etc.
4. Demonstrated intellectual curiosity with strong analytical and problem solving ability.
5. Ability to take large amounts of data, organize effectively, and present in a meaningful and concise manner.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
7. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of the organization from peers to executive management both verbally and in writing.
8. Demonstrated working knowledge of statistical techniques, organizational performance assessment techniques and measurements used to manage the business and ability to apply it to work assignments.
9. Ability to work and deliver under deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
10. Effective organization and prioritization skills to complete assignments within established time frame.
11. Ability to work with a team or independently with initiative and appropriate supervision.
12. Knowledge of internal controls as they relate to data and reporting.
13. Knowledge of accounting practices and procedures, including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) preferred.
