Zoox is seeking a highly motivated, energetic, Systems Engineer to lead and drive the Autonomy Systems on the Zoox ride service.  Autonomy is critical to the Zoox product as it provides the mapping, navigation, and driving functions of the Zoox ride service.  You will be responsible for supporting a diverse group of product managers, software engineers, data scientists, safety systems engineers, and validation engineers in activities including: design documentation of Zoox’s autonomy functions; interface definition for adjacent systems; debug and performance improvement of existing functions; and diagnostic/monitor/watchdog development.

In this role, you will:

  • Build complex multisystem plans which enable Zoox ride service to expand to new markets, use cases, and conditions.  This involves working with leadership from product, program, engineering, and finance.
  • Work with technical leads to create design and documentation of novel functions for non-deterministic systems.  This includes: concept of operation (ConOps); functional decomposition; intended functionality; degraded and failsafe functionality; performance metrics; interface definition for adjacent systems (Teleguidance System and Scheduling System).
  • Support debug and performance improvement of existing autonomy functions.  Create new diagnostics, monitors, or watchdogs to improve reliability.
  • Utilize existing simulation tooling to forecast reliability for future releases.  Bring systems engineering best practices (Design of experiments, trace requirements to test runs) to develop an efficient test plan which accounts for bug fixes, novel features, and product expansions.

Qualifications

  • 12+ Years of Experience
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, standards, or frameworks (INCOSE Handbook, NASA Systems Engineering Handbook, ISO 29148, ISO 15288); hardware development practices (Waterfall); and software development practices (Agile)
  • Familiar with functional safety concepts and evidenced-based testing methodologies (ISO 21448, ISO 26262)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced development environment and proactively collaborate cross-functionally with other teams to solve process problems, and demonstrate strong leadership skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated, with a desire to continuously improve  and learn

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with large-scale system architecture, including integrating hardware and software systems.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence principles (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Neural Networks, and Computer Vision)
  • Familiarity with leveraging machine learning models for system optimization or predictive analytics.
