Job Description

The Director of Analysis - Operations is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the analytics team within the operations division. This position involves leading a group of team leaders, strategic analysts, and data science professionals to design, build, and maintain data tools that help Wellmark deliver strategic, efficient, and reliable services. The director works closely with operations leadership to identify critical information needs, convert data into valuable decision-making tools, and conduct root cause analysis to identify areas for improvement then partners in the strategy deployment process through disciplined problem solving processes and executable business cases.

Qualifications

Required

For consideration, you must meet one of the following educational/technical requirements:

  • Master’s degree in quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, finance, accounting, computer science, engineering, or economics, and 4 years of applicable work experience – OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field (preferred STEM or quantitative discipline (e.g., Finance, Accounting)), and 6 years direct and applicable work experience, OR
  • 10 years of direct and applicable work experience with specific skills listed below:
  • Insatiable business curiosity as demonstrated by width and depth of business model knowledge across industries and markets.
  • Analytical or strategic leadership role, including:
  • Demonstrated problem solving and consultative analysis experience.
  • Critical thinking skills, including demonstrated experience reviewing and synthesizing business information for the purpose of deriving and delivering relevant insights and recommendations resulting in data enabled decisions.
  • Business case development, implementation, and validation.
  • Demonstrated experience with inferential, statistical, supervised and/or unsupervised modeling, regression analysis, time-series, optimization, and simulation.
  • Program and project management.
  • Process development and continuous improvement.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the capability to gather information and synthesize key points, to all levels of the organization.
  • Proactive self-starter with effective time management skills and the ability to organize and prioritize projects or tasks. Ability to manage timelines and competing priorities. Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing team capacity management processes that drive transparency and clarity around workload expectations and planning.

Preferred:

  • 2 years of strategic consulting experience (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BGG or boutique strategic consulting firms).
  • Advanced Degree in a related field including such as Statistics, Biochemistry, Epidemiology, Data Science, or other STEM disciplined or MBA from a top tier school.
  • Health insurance industry experience.
  • Fluency with at least one statistical programming software and language (e.g., R, SAS, Python, Java, etc.).
  • Experience with database and data warehousing technical concepts.
  • Six Sigma and Lean methodology experience.

Additional Information

a. Proactively consult and communicate the art of the possible with key departments and stakeholders on an ongoing basis to solve complex business problems, identify opportunities for optimization, initiate process improvement strategies, and provide expertise for projects, reporting, and analytics.

b. Provide the strategic direction and leadership for the team and work directly with and on behalf of divisional senior leadership to initiate, identify, assess, and recommend strategic efforts.

c. Recruit talented team leaders, analysts and outside resources that can help solve the complex problems that will optimize Wellmark in its quest to make Health Care Better.

d. Lead and mentor the team and ensure consultative problem solving using the following steps: problem definition, disaggregating problem into branches, prioritizing most critical branches, workplan development, analyzing, synthesizing, and then communicating.

e. Ensure use of advanced analytics and data science methods and processes meets or exceeds best practices to drive business outcomes.

f. Provide day-to-day leadership of financial and human resources, focusing on employee and leader coaching, development, performance improvement, coordination, budgeting and forecasting for multiple staff and department specific functions/services.

g. Drive collaboration with business stakeholders to define, design, execute, maintain, monitor, and improve self-service reporting suites and models to support critical business initiatives.

h. Oversee the management of multiple projects simultaneously to ensure they support corporate strategic initiatives and aggressive timelines.  Collaborate and partner with key stakeholders to ensure prioritization items within the business area portfolio of initiatives.

i. Advise and oversee construction of statistical models; assess quality and performance and ensure correct implementation, documentation, and maintenance.

j. Proactively and regularly weigh capacity against business demands and strategic priorities to adjust resources size, skills and structure as needed, Including the use of flexible resourcing options such as matrixed and contracted resources. 

k. Monitor and assess the advancements in analytics and consulting technology and trends on topics such as machine learning, process improvement, decision making optimization, and problem solving. Adopt advancements as appropriate.

l. Refine, develop, and implement quality controls and departmental policies and procedures to ensure quality standards, organizational expectations, and regulatory requirements.  

m. Other duties as assigned.
