The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, and enforcement activities. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

The Economic and Market Analysis department within the Thought Leadership division  supports the Commission in achieving its mandate by helping identify the economic implications of policy proposals; providing evidence-based research in support of the organization’s goals and priorities; and monitoring macroeconomic activity and developments in financial markets.

The Opportunity

This is a unique chance to apply the problem-solving skills learned in your studies to current regulatory issues at Canada’s largest securities regulator.  Reporting to the Manager, Research and Analytics, you will provide research and analytical support to members of the Research and Analysis group to assist in on-going policy related or operational initiatives at the OSC. You will be responsible for several tasks including conducting quantitative and qualitative research, drafting reports and preparing presentations.

What you Bring to the Role

The ideal candidate will be pursuing a master’s degree or at least transitioning towards a post-grad degree in economics, finance, public policy or a quantitative discipline. You have strong communication and writing skills; an ability to work effectively with others and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment. A high degree of proficiency in conducting research, analytical thinking and attention to detail is a prerequisite for this position. In addition, the following would be considered an asset:

  • Demonstrated interest in financial markets and economic analysis
  • Interest in identifying new methods and tools to address emerging research and data challenges
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and experience building reports and dashboards using Tableau, or other business intelligence tools.
  • Experience with data science tools in Python or R for data preparation and analysis
  • Experience with key financial market data sources such as Bloomberg, LSEG Refinitiv, S&P Capital IQ, Morningstar Direct, etc.
