Applied Research Associates, Inc. is seeking summer interns to assist staff with research and analysis.  ARA scientists and engineers are developing signal processing for the transport of radio frequency (RF) radiation, RF detector response, and signal processing for small motor and drone identification. We are also working in the areas of machine learning, virtual/mixed reality, computer vision, optics, and lasers.

As a Technical Intern, you will assist staff with data gathering and analysis, along with other tasks. You will perform data entry, database management, data and technical analysis, and limited programming. Tasks may also include a review of professional journals and publications to extract and summarize information relevant to assigned research projects; research using internet search techniques, informational resources, and other available research tools. As an intern, you will have the chance to learn through close interactions with senior research scientists that will provide you with opportunities for technical exploration. You may also be required to occasionally assist with routine office tasks, such as ordering supplies, printing/binding reports, and maintaining internal library resources.

Technical Intern Required Skills:

Due to the nature of the work, qualified candidates must be a U.S. Citizen. The candidate must be an enrolled full-time Junior or Senior student and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater (out of a 4.0) towards any B.A. or B.S. degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, or Mathematics with 3-4 years of experience. The candidate must be able to work independently and must have good oral and written communication skills.  

Technical Intern Desired Qualifications:

A candidate with a basic understanding of mathematical modeling of physical or engineering systems or processes is desirable. Basic computer programming and data analysis in any of the following languages is desirable: Python, Java, JavaScript, C, C++, C#. Familiarity with computer vision, edge/cloud computing, machine learning, embedded hardware, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) or wireless/ radio communications is a plus. Familiarity with Windows, MS Office, Linux, SharePoint, Git, and Jira are also a plus. Demonstrated strong research and analytical skills are a plus.
