Position Summary:

Marathon Pipe Line’s (MPL) Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst position provides the opportunity to work within MPL’s Damage Prevention, Technology, and Analytics team (DPT&A). The position will interact closely with various MPL Process departments, Logistics and Storage Support Services (L3S), and MPL Field Operations personnel.  As an integral part of the DPT&A Team, this position will work on our project team to advance MPL’s Advanced Right-of-Way (ROW) Inspection initiative. The Analyst will also oversee updates and analysis of MPL’s GIS database as needed. In addition, the position will drive process improvements for the automation and data quality of our GIS systems, working closely with stakeholders and data owners. 

MPL’s Geographic Information System is a business-critical database documenting over 8200 miles of mainline piping and all related geographic features.  This system is linked to many MPL critical processes such as Damage Prevention, Regulatory Compliance, and Integrity Management. Diligence and attention to detail are key to ensure that modifications to MPL’s pipelines and facilities are properly documented in GIS.  The GIS Analyst will interface with project and process leaders to understand the proposed changes and ensure that documentation collected and submitted in a complete, accurate and timely manner.

This position is part of a progression. Additional salary grades may be considered commensurate with candidate experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports MPL’s Advanced ROW Inspection initiative by leveraging GIS knowledge, utilizing:  photogrammetry, raster data analysis, and automation utilizing cloud platforms.
  • Supports MPL’s Computer Vision Threat Detection initiative by utilizing IoT/edge device management/solutions.
  • Serves as custodian of MPL’s Geographic Information System, Pipe Line Asset Center, Alignment Sheets, spatial data files, Web Maps, Mobile Mapping Applications, and related processes.
  • Recommends, implements, and maintains appropriate controls, standards and procedures for GIS data maintenance and related processes.
  • Coordinates the creation, update and maintenance of all mainline pipeline centerline and related event data.  This includes managing updates from GPS surveys, Inline Inspection tool runs, data quality improvement initiatives, and field data collection.
  • Manages GIS, HCA, Spill Modeling, and Naming Standard updates through the MPL Management of Change system and partners with Marathon Project Leaders and contractors to ensure GIS updates from projects are completed accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Helps manage MPL’s surveying equipment and processes across all operating areas and acts as a technical resource for field ROW technicians.
  • Performs High Consequence Area (HCA) and Spill Modeling analysis on Marathon Pipe Line Assets. Handles special mapping, data requests, and data quality reports.
  • Develops documentation and administers training to key stakeholders on the GIS update process. Serves as a GIS specialist within the Incident Command Structure for company Emergency Responses.

Minimum Requirements

Degree: Bachelor’s degree required

Major Discipline: GIS, Surveying and Mapping, or Technology-based

Work Experience: 5 years minimum GIS experience is required.

Travel Required (%): 10%

Proficiencies:

  • Strong understanding of geospatial data formats, coordinate systems, and projection principles
  • Experience with data manipulation, scripting languages (e.g., Python), and database management.
  • Experience with enterprise geodatabases configuration and database scripting
  • Experience with raster data processing and manipulation.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Self-starter with good communication skills
  • Experience with Cloud Computing Platforms

Programs and Processes: Candidates should have experience with GIS Mapping, Spill Modeling, Surveying Equipment and Processes, and Interface Software such as Power BI, Power Automate, and the ESRI ArcGIS Platform (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, ArcGIS Online).
