A Senior Consultant, Software Engineer generalist position is being opened on our internal Nationwide Tech Consulting team reporting through the Developer Platform and Experience (DevXP) organization. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated strong problem solving and communication skills, be self-driven, innovative, and have deep full stack software development experience in both AWS/Kubernetes. Credibility and influence are critical traits for Sr Consultants as they are frequently asked to present emerging and evolving technology topics to Nationwide Senior Leadership.

This role is responsible for:

  • Ushering in new technologies and growing adoption

  • Uplifting and accelerating development teams across the enterprise

  • Setting standards for code development

  • Solving/debugging critical issues

  • Acting as a mentor

  • Bringing consistency in development of quality code

In addition, candidates must be in tune with industry trends and be tasked with driving maturity and innovation forward across a wide number of existing and emerging technologies.

The primary focus of this role is with software engineering in building and deploying AI Agents and the secondary focus with leveraging AI as a software engineer. Sought out candidates are expected to be capable of hands-on development and will have demonstrated these abilities by being current and active contributors to codebases and production systems for one or more of the following:

  • Generative AI / Agentic AI tools such as AWS Bedrock, Amazon Q, OpenAI, LangChain, OpenSearch

  • Choosing the right algorithms (deep learning, reinforcement learning, Bayesian Networks)

  • Gathering and preparing AI ready data using some one or more of the following languages and frameworks

    • Python (Pandas, pytest, PyUnit)

    • Spark

    • SQL

  • Github Copilot, Cline, Cursor, Sourcegraph or other AI Developer Assistants

Other valued technical skills include:

  • Splunk

  • New Relic

  • Experience implementing DevSecOps concepts is expected

  • APIs and API Proxies/Apigee

  • Event Streaming/Kafka

  • Data Engineering (Talend, Databricks, Informatica)

  • Vector Databases

  • Core AWS services and CI/CD tooling such as CloudFormation, CodePipeline, CDK, Lambda, IAM, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, CloudFront, SQS, SNS, etc.

  • Cloud Native development and CI/CD tooling including Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Harness, Helm, Podman, etc.

As a Software Engineer you will focus on mentoring and leading others to deliver high quality, cost-effective technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications.

  • Responsible for applying secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

  • Mentors and trains others on design techniques, tools and coding standards. 

  • Executes and provides strategic advice on using technology to achieve goals. 

  • Drives cross-collaboration and execution of projects across multiple teams. 

  • Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices. 

  • Champions the use of DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques. 

  • Drives continuous learning and improvement through ongoing training, practice and innovation. 

  • Works across organizations and product areas to drive joint technical roadmaps. 

  • Manages individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively. 

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Director or above.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.

Experience: Eight or more years of analysis and technology experience. 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Hands on technical leadership experience leading project teams and setting technical direction. Proficiency in multiple programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript. Extensive knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle sophisticated business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus. 

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. 

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
