Job Description
 

Our Senior Director, Global Decision Sciences & Insights (GDSI) for HIV & EV –e leads market and customer insights, forecasting, and analytics. Key stakeholders include the HIV LAO Launch/EV Pipeline Global Strategic Marketing team and various internal partners as well as an external collaboration.  This role reports to the Executive Director, Global Decision Sciences & Insights, HIV/Emerging Viruses. The responsibilities include but are not limited to leading projects, driving HIV and EV pipeline insights, participating in high-profile projects, and collaborating with internal stakeholders globally. And representing Gilead GDSI perspectives in a partnership with another company.  

This role will have global responsibility for generating foundational market understanding within the Gilead’s HIV and Emerging Virus through the execution of market research and forecasting/analytics in key commercial markets (i.e. US, EU4+UK, Japan, and China).  This position will support the commercialization efforts for Gilead’s emerging virus portfolio and Gilead’s collaboration with an Industry Partner for the joint launch of a novel HIV treatment combination.

This role is located in our Foster City, CA office (at least 3 days in office with our core collaboration days Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).

The individual will:

  • Strong Leadership skills to manage complex relationships with senior executives and industry partner and represent function within JCC of Gilead and Industry Partner

  • Primary point of contact, manage relationship with, and jointly lead work with an industry partner

  • Lead with solid hands-on technical skills across analytics, forecasting, and market research.

  • Lead identification of information needs for upcoming critical business decisions and define global primary market research and data analytics priorities, together with GSM leads

  • Drive robust integrated insights generation and deliver a clear and compelling storyline for HIV/EV pipeline and a novel HIV treatment combination supporting strategic decision-making.

  • Serve as the key contact for HIV a novel HIV treatment combination and HIV/EV pipeline-related market and customer insights and forecasts.

  • For launch, would be responsible for insights and testing of commercial launch strategy and promotional materials

  • Collaborate with Data Science for deeper insights into market dynamics and customer behaviors.

  • Develop and maintain the global forecast model to reflect latest updates on market insights.   Proactive to identify opportunities to improve the model structure, pressure test assumptions, and develop approaches/ analytics to enhance the robustness of assumptions for EV and ISL combination assets

  • Ability to assume full responsibility for accuracy and reliability of complex analyses with minimum oversight

  • Be able to right size the forecasting approach with the balance between level of rigor, time and resources constraints, and business impact

  • Be the methodology expert and be able to triangulate with various approach/ incorporate latest industry best practices to enhance the robustness of the analytics and recommendations 

Essential duties include:

  • Providing hands-on market analytics and insights leadership for global marketing strategy.

  • Insight generation and forecasting to support governance decisions on development programs

  • Leading strategic forecasting and commercial assessment activities for pipeline products and communication of assessments and recommendations to the senior leadership team.

  • Acting as the integrated insights lead as well as a business partner for HIV/EV pipeline, representing the team in key situations.

  • Leading ad hoc strategy projects and initiatives.

  • Collaborating with key internal and external partners to improve efficiency and consistency.

  • Enabling professional growth and development for individual contributors through leadership effectiveness and solid technical skills.

  • Work closely with GSM to understand the business priorities and align on analytics needs

  • Be able to proactive identify business knowledge/ insights gap even in times to have independent view, explore various options of analytics approaches, decide on what is the right approach based on time/ resources, business criticality, and level of rigor requirement before execution

  • Share and gain alignment on commercial analytics insights to local teams (e.g., US forecasting, US analytics, local affiliates) to ensure insights are adopted and incorporated in execution

  • Be able to communicate the analytics findings in an executive-ready approach with minimum oversight.   Focus on the recommendations, business implications, but at the same time, have the in-depth knowledge and ability to articulate the details as needed.  

  • Be seen as a credible insights leader that can share objective insights and mobilize the organization to actions anchored on the insights developed.  

Market research

  • Market Research Related to Pipeline Planning, Global Marketing and Business Development

  • Define Global market research priorities in collaboration with GSM Indication and/or Therapeutic Area Leads to proactively address key business decisions

  • Create foundational market understanding through the development of treatment flow maps, market segmentation, attribute/benefit testing, positioning and campaign development, etc.

  • Conduct primary research: develop qualitative and quantitative market research studies with physicians, patients, and payers

  • Manage vendors to determine appropriate research methodology, ensure project alignment to business objectives and guide execution and reporting

  • Examine research findings to understand data, key market insights and implications for Gilead

  • Conducting secondary research: analyze secondary data sources (e.g. Rx, claims, EMR, epidemiology data) to produce descriptive and diagnostic summaries, and insights/implications

  • Evaluating potential new secondary data sources, to rationalize against array of data sources currently used by Gilead in a partnered environment

  • Examples of work can include but are not limited to opportunity assessments, brand driver analyses, patient-level data analyses, performance assessments, treatment flow mapping, segmentation, product attribute/benefit testing, positioning/messaging, patient journey mapping, HCP journey mapping, etc.

Analytics & Forecasting

  • Analyze secondary data sources (e.g., prescription data, epidemiology studies) to generate insights and identify implications

  • Forecasting/Analytics Related to Pipeline Planning, Global Marketing and Business Development

  • Develop long-term (i.e. 10-year) strategic forecasts for pipeline and marketed products that incorporate disease epidemiology, evolving treatment paradigms, competitive products and global pricing and access dynamics

  • Collaborate with internal experts in Market Research, Literature Resources, Competitive Intelligence, R&D, and Marketing/Sales leads to generate robust forecast assumptions

  • Conduct forecast scenario analysis to support decision-making by Commercial, R&D, Corporate Development, Finance, and Corporate executive leadership

  • Scope, design, and manage the execution of quantitative market research (e.g., discrete-choice conjoint) to inform revenue forecasting

  • Co-develop and partner with Advanced Analytics in development and application of predictive sciences/modeling to deeply understand stakeholder insights related to patient journeys, physician treatment processes, institutional and provider decision making, etc. and brand interventional strategies for both US and ex-US

  • Solid understanding of ex-US data limitations and creativity to perform analytics with limited data and triangulate insights across data sources”

  • Examples of decisions that may be informed by analytics include progression of internal assets through the R&D pipeline, partnerships or acquisitions of specific assets or whole companies, strategic portfolio mix, product pricing at launch and at the time of generic competition

Insights Synthesis and Communications

  • Communicate results of market research and forecasting/analytics to a variety of internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization:

  • Develop clear and effective communication materials (e.g. reports, presentations) targeted to key audiences

  • Present and lead discussion of results and insights in a collaborative, efficient manner

  • Work with Global Strategic Marketing Indication and/or Therapeutic Area Leads to understand implications of market research and forecasting/analytics insights for Gilead’s business, and develop plans to address these implications

  • Lead ad hoc strategy projects and initiatives (e.g. evaluating new indications and markets) for internal assets and external opportunities

  • Work with group leadership to improve the efficiency, consistency, rigor, and credibility of GDSI/GCSO

Leadership

  • Ability to set a vision, exercise sound business judgment and clear decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Credible as an integrated insights leader.  Being sought after by cross-functional partners for insights/ recommendations

  • Representing Gilead GDSI perspectives in a partnership with another company

  • Strong business acumen to understand business priorities/ focus from GSM/ marketing/ Program strategy perspectives to prioritize GDSI work, focus, and impact accordingly 

  • Provide guidance to junior team members, think strategically, and can anticipate issues from technical, and business point of views

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact cross-functionally, esp. global to local affiliates interactions, and at all levels of the organization to drive effective decisions and alignment

  • Experience to navigate complex organization dynamics, different point of views, and be able to problem-solve, drive to consensus/ alignment via clear and compelling storylines

  • High attention to detail together with an ability to understand the 'big picture'.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with an ability to efficiently communicate technical information to non-technical members of senior management.   Ready to present to senior management with the presence, ability to develop storyline, articulate recommendations, and develop the right level of written communications

  • Has an opinion, is a part of the team that decides on commercial strategy and is not just a provider of information.

  • Proactive, self-starter with the ability to learn quickly

  • Strong project management skills - planning, prioritization, organizational ability, objective setting, meeting management and plan execution

  • Able to prioritize and utilize limited resources to manage multiple and/or conflicting requests from a variety of internal customers, manage peak workload periods and ad hoc requests.   Agile to react and plan for changing priorities is required.  

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and 14 Years’ Experience

OR

Masters' Degree and 12 Years’ Experience

OR

PhD and 12 Years’ Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • With a Bachelor’s degree, at least 14 years’ relevant experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or consulting with a focus in one or more areas of market research, forecasting, analytics, decision analytics, commercial strategy, or marketing or at least 12 years’ experience (with an advanced degree)

  • MBA, Ph.D. in Life Sciences, or M.D. is preferred

  • Experience specific to the HIV therapeutic area is preferred

  • Impeccable credibility as a commercial analytics expert and partner with the brand teams, country teams and other cross-functional partners

  • Business leadership experience, and a track record of “influencing without authority” (specifically, more senior Commercial and cross-functional partners) in successful conflict resolution, and driving consensus

  • Prior experience conducting, analyzing, and communicating qualitative and quantitative market research is required

  • Experience in patient-based market/revenue modeling is required

  • Must possess good task management skills, planning, prioritization, objective setting, and meeting management and plan execution

  • History of working and delivering on multiple projects simultaneously, with tight deadlines and changing priorities is required

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required

  • Ability to effectively leverage Microsoft Office (specifically PowerPoint and Excel) to present quantitative data in graphical form is required

  • Experience in successfully presenting to senior leadership audiences, including simplifying complex materials, educating, and managing audiences with differing viewpoints to get to alignment via clear and compelling storylines

  • Experience in biopharmaceutical-focused marketing, commercial strategy, or consulting is desirable

  • Proven history of working and delivering on multiple projects simultaneously, with tight deadlines and changing priorities is required

  • Passionate about the function, and a natural curiosity to solve complex problems

The salary range for this position is: $261,375.00 - $338,250.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
