THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Investment Risk Modelling, the Analyst, Counterparty & Credit Risk is primarily responsible for the fundamental credit analysis of financial institutions, the onboarding of new brokers and counterparties, and the ongoing monitoring of the securities lending program. They research best practices and contribute to the implementation and ongoing maintenance of the counterparty risk mandate.
The Analyst will work closely with the Credit Risk Management team to assign ratings and ensure the timely updating and monitoring of BCI’s private investments in the financial sector. The Analyst will also coordinate with the Investment Operations team for the activation and monitoring of approved counterparties/brokers. They assist in the design and production of counterparty risk monitoring reports, the enhancement of risk evaluation analytics / processes, and other ad-hoc projects.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
The Investment Strategy & Risk (ISR) department plays a key role in setting, implementing, executing, and monitoring the long-term strategies of BCI’s clients. This is accomplished by working with clients, management and asset classes to define the optimal path to achieve clients’ outcomes and enabling BCI’s investment structures and processes necessary to fulfill these outcomes. ISR consists of three branches: Strategic Asset Allocation, Total Fund Management, and Investment Risk.
WHAT YOU BRING
Must have:
Degree in finance, economics, commerce, statistics or a related discipline
1-3 years’ experience in the risk management or investment industry
An enthusiastic and cooperative attitude and be able to work independently and function well in a team environment
An ability to demonstrate adaptability in a high paced environment
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong conceptual skills and attention to detail with high level of commitment to quality work
Understanding of analytical tools and their data needs as well as basic risk management methodologies
Sound working knowledge of Excel & VBA
Broad knowledge of financial instruments
Understanding of basic risk management methodologies, analytical tools and data needs
Ability to express complex and technical concepts in a clear and concise fashion to stakeholders
Diplomatic and tactful with strong interpersonal skills
Preferred:
Postgraduate degree in finance, statistics or a related discipline is an asset
Experience with fundamental credit analysis or counterparty risk management
Experience with stress testing and financial forecasting
Familiarity with systems such as Bloomberg, Capital IQ, and risk calculation systems
Familiarity with ISDA, CSA and GMRA agreements
Pension fund, bank or asset management experience
Professional designation (CFA or FRM)
Knowledge of and experience using AI/machine learning techniques
Proficiency and project experience in SQL, R Studio and/or Python
WHAT YOU GET TO DO
Performs the fundamental credit analysis and internal credit risk ratings proposals for new and existing financial institutions (including BCI’s counterparties, brokers and private assets in the financial sector)
Monitors the approved counterparties against early warning signals
Contributes to the development of credit risk reporting templates
Identifies and monitors the counterparty risks from BCI’s Securities Lending activities
Conducts recalibration and improves the Downgrade Probability Model
Conducts ongoing attribution analysis for the Downgrade Probability
Assists in automating and streamlining existing processes related to credit and counterparty risk
Coordinates the activation of new brokers and counterparties with other BCI departments
Participates in documenting procedures and directives related to credit and counterparty risk
Prepares periodic risk reports
Gathers and organizes data from various sources
Stays abreast of regulatory changes or market developments that may impact BCI exposure to counterparty risk

Work from our downtown Victoria office.
SALARY RANGE
BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.
The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $77,000 to $93,000.
The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity.
We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we compete for talent and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.
Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience and expertise.
