Scientist - Analytical Functional Genomics

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. The Amgen Functional Genomics organization is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the research team at our facility in South San Francisco. This Scientist will report to a Senior Manager in the Discovery Genomics team of Functional Genomics.

What you will do:

  • Apply computational, statistical, and machine learning techniques for the analysis of internal and external omics datasets.
  • Advance target discovery and mechanism of action studies by analyzing forward genetics screens supporting multiple therapeutic areas.
  • Collaborate with internal computational groups to develop analytical frameworks for advanced perturbational techniques, including perturb-seq and opto-seq
  • Provide data analytical support for functional genomics efforts in target discovery
  • Support Functional Genomics pipelines by providing routine data QC or analyses, including bulk RNA-seq alignment, transcriptomic assessment of edited cell lines, and single cell multi-omics.
  • Support NGS data management through experimental registration and sample tracking using established platforms, ensuring data integrity, standardization, and accessibility. Develop new data management frameworks as NGS methods and data structures evolve.
  • Communicate research findings to subject matter experts across therapeutic areas through internal and external meetings and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed forums.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree or

Master’s degree and 2 years of experience or

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in bioinformatics, genetics, genomics, computational biology or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing NGS data, including CRISPR, single-cell RNA-seq, epigenomics, spatial transcriptomics, bulk RNA-seq, and ability to connect modalities into large multi-omics approaches. Experience with single-cell CRISPR and optical screening analysis is preferred.
  • Proficiency in leveraging existing bioinformatics tools and developing custom code to support NGS and functional genomics technology development.
  • Strong programming skills in R and/or Python, experience with Unix/Linux environments, and experience working in a cloud computing environment.
  • Experience with best practices for data integrity and reproducibility.
  • Demonstrated expertise in critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and innovative data analysis, evidenced by significant contributions to scientific programs and publications in top-tier journals
  • Expertise in experimental design and data analysis for perturbational studies and target discovery.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
