Engineering Manager - User Adoption

We are seeking a data-driven Engineering Manager with a strong machine learning background to lead a team within our Growth organization. This team will focus on enhancing user conversion, platform engagement, user modeling, and personalization, with the goal of helping users discover new interests on Reddit.
The successful candidate will be passionate about solving both user and business problems, thrive in ambiguity, and enjoy brainstorming, experimentation, and iteration. They will collaborate closely with stakeholders across engineering, product, user acquisitions, and leadership to develop and implement impactful solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a team of seasoned ML and backend engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment that promotes professional growth.
- Spearhead the development and implementation of advanced user understanding models and systems, integrating them into key Reddit surfaces to enhance user experience and personalization.
- Devise and implement comprehensive personalization and user experience strategies tailored to diverse user cohorts, with the goal of optimizing user retention.
- Leverage a mix of on-platform tools (in-app messages, emails, push notifications) and off-platform media (digital, social, traditional) to boost user acquisition and retention.
- Champion a culture of innovation and experimentation, where team members are encouraged to explore, test, and refine novel ideas.
- Establish a clear technical vision and direction for user modeling and recommender systems, while staying ahead of the curve in terms of emerging technologies.
- Navigate ambiguity with confidence, utilizing data-driven insights to guide the team towards successful outcomes.
- Work in close partnership with Product and ML teams to ensure effective leadership, alignment with broader organizational objectives, and maximum impact
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
- 8+ years of industry experience, including 3+ years managing an ML engineering team.
- Strong background in software engineering and machine learning.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (Java, Go, Python) and experience with distributed systems.
- Proven ability to brainstorm and implement experimental ideas to drive growth.
- Exceptional leadership, team management, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Experience in engineering management or technical leadership roles, preferably in high-growth tech companies.
- Domain expertise in ML, with experience in areas such as user modeling and recommendation systems.

In addition to base salary, this job is eligible to receive equity in the form of restricted stock units, and depending on the position offered, it may also be eligible to receive a commission.
