Deadline for application: 15 April 2025. The ESM is looking for an Asset Liability Management and Financial Structuring Trainee (ALM and FS) to contribute to the high-quality monitoring and reporting of structural balance sheet risks (liquidity, interest rate, and foreign exchange) for the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and its predecessor the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF). The trainee will contribute to developing and using data science tools and data analytics and utilising financial quantitative data-driven solutions. 

The ESM is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Members facing financing difficulties. To date, the ESM and its predecessor organisation, the EFSF, have launched six financial assistance programmes to five countries, provided financial support, monitored repayment capacity, and engaged with partner institutions for programme design in areas of financial interest. 

Through this traineeship, you will be enabled to acquire practical experience and knowledge of the day-to-day work of the different business areas and to work in a multilingual and multicultural environment, and you will be introduced to the professional world and the constraints, duties and opportunities therein. In this context, you will interact with internal and external stakeholders.

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINEESHIP

  • Support the monitoring and analysis of EFSF/ESM structural risks (liquidity, interest rate, and foreign exchange) and produce ALM reports.
  • Use data modelling techniques to assist in computing, forecasting, and optimising costs and risks for the ESM/EFSF and its beneficiary Member States. 
  • Contribute to updating and improving the team documentation.

KEY BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE

  • Advance studies or a university degree or specialisation in a quantitative field (finance, economics, computer science, engineering, or mathematics or equivalent)
  • Ability to leverage data analysis, statistics, and quantitative analysis
  • Keen interest in financial data modelling, financial risk concepts, financial derivatives, and risk management techniques
  • Ability to code in Python, R, VBA, or another programming language 
  • Knowledge of relational databases (Microsoft SQL server, MySQL, SQLite) will be considered an asset
  • GIT knowledge for code and control versioning would be an asset
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Experience with business intelligence tools and concepts (Microsoft Power BI and/or Tableau) would be an asset
