Position Overview:

As the Head of The Software Development Center, you will lead and mentor a talented team of software developers and automation engineers to deliver and optimize robust software systems across a variety of platforms and technologies.  You will ensure that deliveries focus on high value business outcomes, capabilities and services that seamlessly integrate into the Freddie Ecosystem.  You will leverage industry best practices, along with Freddie Mac’s modern Agile methodology, tools, practices, mindset and culture to deliver.

This role requires a dynamic leader who is not only technically proficient, but understands the complexities of system development, delivery, and operational states within environment like Freddie Mac.  Additionally, they need to understand the broader business context & complexities associated with the automation/capability targets the team is focused on, this will drive more robust outcomes & efficient deliveries.  The ideal candidate will have experience in managing cross-functional teams, driving software delivery initiatives, have a passion for team mentorship and growth, and implementing cutting-edge technologies.

  • System Development & Integration:

    • Work closely with delivery teams and key enterprise stakeholders to ensure that the delivery efforts of the team are  to ensure solutions .

    • Oversee system design and development, ensuring automation initiatives support and enhance system architecture.

    • Have a deep understanding of system development principles, including microservice architecture, to facilitate automation initiatives effectively.

  • AI & Modern Practices Integration:

    • Leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning in automation solutions to optimize processes and enhance system intelligence.

    • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in AI, DevOps, and automation to ensure the organization is using modern and effective practices.

    • Identify and drive out adoption of new technologies in the Software Lab.

  • CI/CD & Delivery Practices:

    • Promote and implement Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) practices across teams to streamline development cycles and improve delivery times.

    • Collaborate with software engineering, QA, and operations teams to ensure automated pipelines are effective and efficient.

  • Technology Leadership & Collaboration:

    • Serve as a subject matter expert on how to deliver software within the control landscape of Freddie Mac.

    • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver automation solutions that drive value.

Your Impact:

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Strong understanding of system development, particularly microservice architecture.

    • Knowledge of Java, Spring boot, Python. containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud environments (AWS).

    • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Jira for project management, and modern delivery and DevOps practices.

    • Familiarity with AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, or similar domains.

  • Leadership & Communication:

    • Proven experience in leading teams, managing performance, and mentoring engineers.

    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

    • A collaborative approach to leadership, with the ability to work cross-functionally and drive initiatives across teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)

  • 15+ years of experience in Information Technology, with at least 5 years in automation leadership or management roles

  • Hands-on experience with cloud services (AWS preferred) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)

Keys to Success in this Role:

  • Expertise in modern software development practices, especially Agile methodologies

  • Experience with microservice-based architectures, REST APIs, and distributed systems

  • Familiarity with enterprise-level software delivery tools like Jira, Confluence, bitbucket, Jenkins or similar platforms

  • A passion for automation, process improvement, and leveraging new technologies to solve business challenges

This position has an annualized market-based salary range of $216,000 - $324,000 and is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
