We are looking for a Distribution System Planning Engineer to support the development and implementation of strategies, processes, and tools that enhance planning functions for the ENMAX Power Distribution and Network electrical system. As our industry evolves, this position is integral to executing ENMAX Power’s Advanced Distribution Planning Tactics. This role involves assessing the short- and long-term impacts of system load growth, new customer connections, and emerging technologies on the grid.

The successful candidate will develop projects to maintain system capacity and reliability while overseeing initiatives through to completion.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assess and determine the future development of the EPC Distribution and Network system in the best interests of EPC customers.

  • Develop new and maintain existing planning processes, tools and standards.

  • Accountable for Planning Cycle deliverables including:

    • Load forecast

    • System assessment

    • Project justification and project scope development

    • System development plan

    • Distribution and Network Integrated Plan

  • Accountable for the identification and development of substation capacity upgrades and new substation projects.

  • Evaluation of customer connections and determination of system changes required to allow the customer service connection. Issue out capital work for identified system changes.

  • Provide technical support to customers on the system requirements related to their connection service (Large Loads and Distributed Energy Resources (DER)).

  • Ensure system investment on customer projects align with EPC investment practices.

  • Identify and estimate customer loading trends to support load forecasting, system assessment and general system development.

  • Update annual Load Capacity and Hosting Capacity maps

  • Steward programs and projects from ideation to completion.

  • Assist in regulatory undertakings as required (AUC, AESO, etc.)

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering

  • P.Eng status with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGA)

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in the power distribution industry, with a preference for utilities experience.

  • Sound engineering and operational knowledge of distribution utility systems (Distribution and Network) under normal and contingency conditions.

  • Knowledge of the Distribution System Performance Standard for Distribution and Network systems.

  • Experience with long-term (10-year) electrical load forecasting at system, substation, transformer, feeder, and customer levels.

  • Proficiency in using CYME (CYMDIST) software for radial distribution and meshed secondary network systems

  • Experience conducting power system assessments for distribution systems (N-1 contingencies) and network systems (N-1-1 and N-2 contingencies) and developing solutions.

  • Experience writing business cases for distribution solutions and Need Identification documents for transmission and distribution projects.

  • Experience with the AESO interconnection process for projects, such as adding substation transformers or substations alongside distribution solutions driven by growth.

  • Basic knowledge of the Alberta regulatory environment.

  • Proficiency in Python Programming and Microsoft Power BI is an asset.

  • Previous experience in DER Interconnection studies is an asset.

  • Experience with data analysis, including regression analysis, time series analysis or Monte Carlo simulation is an asset.

Location:  This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
