The Position

The Data Analytics and Engineering team at GenMark is driving the evolution of our analytics strategy, leveraging advanced machine learning to push beyond descriptive and diagnostic insights into predictive and cognitive analytics. As a Data Scientist on our team, you'll apply data science, machine learning, and image analysis to manufacturing and quality control challenges in medical device production. You'll work closely with domain experts to integrate diverse data sources, develop analytical solutions, and generate insights that enhance product performance and reliability. Your work will contribute to highlighting opportunities for product improvements that create real value for our customers.

In addition to these responsibilities, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining data products and algorithms critical for ongoing projects within the Operations and R&D departments, ensuring that the solutions you create are aligned with our goals for continuous innovation and improvement.

In this role, you will rapidly prototype, validate, and deploy machine learning and analytical models while implementing automation for continuous data processing and on-demand analysis. Your expertise in data science, image processing, and machine learning will enhance our data capabilities, ensuring timely and accurate insights. You bring a strong foundation in object-oriented programming and software engineering best practices, allowing you to tackle complex challenges with strategic, scalable solutions. Beyond technical skills, your ability to communicate across disciplines and translate complex findings into actionable insights will be key to driving impact. By immersing yourself in GenMark's cutting-edge technology, you'll contribute to our digital transformation and play a critical role in delivering groundbreaking innovations.

This position is located in Carlsbad, on-site or hybrid.


 

The Opportunity

As a Data Scientist, you will provide analytical and programming expertise to develop machine learning models and data-driven solutions for manufacturing and quality control in medical device production. You will design and implement analytical applications that integrate diverse data sources, enabling insights to enhance product performance and reliability. Your work will contribute to advancing GenMark’s data analytics strategy, ensuring that data science and machine learning techniques are effectively applied across various aspects of the manufacturing process and product analytics.

Who you are

  • BS 8+ years experience in data science and machine learning. Preferred: MS 6+ years, PhD 2+ years.

  • College/University degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Bioengineering, or a related field.

  • Experience in the biotech industry is preferred, with experience in manufacturing being a plus.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrates experience or adaptability to modern working methods consistent with an agile and growth mindset, including agile behaviors and methodologies.

Programming & Tools:

  • Expertise in Python is essential; proficiency in R, C, C#, Java is a plus.

  • Skilled in writing reusable functions and packages.

  • Experience with data access (e.g., SQL) and automation/deployment of analysis tools.

  • Familiarity with advanced data visualization libraries (e.g., Plotly, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotnine).

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Keras).

  • Strong understanding of code documentation, testing, modern version control systems, and software development techniques.

  • Familiarity with AI/GenAI/LLM/ML terminologies, capabilities, and applications to drive efficiencies and insights.

Scientific & Engineering Knowledge:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong understanding of applied statistics, image processing, and signal processing.

  • Ability to manipulate, transform, and analyze various data types, including heterogeneous data structures.

  • Knowledge of molecular techniques (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, PCR, immunoassays).

Collaboration & Problem Solving:

  • Motivated to create solutions in healthcare to improve patient outcomes and clinician experiences.

  • Ability to both guide and accept guidance from team members.

  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and productive collaboration.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $110,600 - $205,400 annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
