Job Duties

Working as a member of a team, the Training Associate/Data Analyst analyzes criminal justice data and presents the results to diverse audiences. The Training Associate/Data Analyst develops training modules based on the research findings, plans training events, and conducts seminars for an array of criminal justice professionals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities –

The Training Associate/Data Analyst works as a member of a team to develop training modules, organize and schedule training events, and conduct training seminars to instruct criminal justice professionals on the preparation of Virginia’s sentencing guidelines. When training, the job requires the Training Associate/Data Analyst to unload boxes weighing up to 30 pounds, set up displays and/or a projector, and stand while presenting up to five hours at a time (with training sessions lasting approximately six hours overall). Overnight travel within the Commonwealth is required. The individual in this position assists sentencing guidelines users across the state by answering the agency’s “hotline” phone line and by responding via e-mail or text. This individual plays a critical role in quality control operations by assisting with the development and use of computer programming, machine learning, and artificial intelligence technology to ensure the accuracy of the guidelines data system. This individual also analyzes sentencing guidelines data, which includes tracking judicial response to the guidelines and identifying pertinent trends and presenting the results to the Commission as requested. The Training Associate/Data Analyst must have sufficient understanding of the research process and be able to apply research findings in their training and program work. This individual works as a member of a team to assist in the analysis of proposed legislation or other data analysis as assigned. Data collection and research projects may require the Training Associate/Data Analyst to review and direct the work of interns and hourly employees. Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have demonstrated ability to perform all aspects of professional training. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal skills and considerable experience in orally communicating material to diverse audiences. The candidate must be able to read and comprehend statutes, policies and rules. The position requires good listening skills and the ability to answer questions by apply existing rules to complex situations. Ability to conduct data analysis and effectively describe and summarize data is needed. Prior experience working with databases is required.

Time management skills are needed to conclude individual or team projects at agreed upon deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is essential. This includes communicating technical aspects clearly and concisely to individuals from non-technical backgrounds.

A college degree in a social science discipline required (advanced degree is preferred). Prior experience in the criminal justice system, especially related to the courts, is highly desired.
Experience with the application of statistical analysis software such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA is necessary. The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point software.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience -
Preference will be given to candidates who have applied their research and training skills in criminal justice settings.

Additional Considerations

This position is based in downtown Richmond, Virginia, and does not include a remote work option.
