Machine Vision Engineer Sr., salary grade 9, reports to Head of Operations, Battery Accessories, and is located in San Jose, California, with a role classification of Fully On-Site.
Role Summary:
To achieve these ambitious goals, we are seeking a dedicated Machine Vision Engineer. This is a senior-level Member of Technical Staff to our Operations Department. This individual will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing advanced machine vision systems for automation equipment in our state-of-the-art solid-state battery production. It is a critical role in developing and optimizing vision systems that drive automation processes, from vision system design and integration to troubleshooting and continuous improvement to ensure the quality and consistency of solid-state battery cells.
Role Responsibilities:
· Lead the conceptualization, design, and full implementation of machine vision systems, including detailed hardware (camera, lens, lighting, frame grabbers, displacement sensors, laser profilers) and software (vision algorithms) selection.
· Design, program, and commission vision cameras for 2D/3D guidance of robots and part inspection, ensuring high accuracy and robust reliability in automated processes.
· Integrate machine vision systems with PLC controllers (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), I/O modules, and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, etc.), ensuring seamless communication with automation equipment.
· Analyzing data from vision systems and developing machine learning models to improve inspection accuracy.
· Lead vision system updates, upgrades, and replacements on all equipment in the cell organization
· Collaborate with teams responsible for product design engineering, quality, production, and maintenance to ensure the successful design and deployment of vision systems for full production-scale operations.
· Troubleshoot and resolve issues in existing vision systems, leading root-cause analysis and implementing continuous improvements, while coordinating with external suppliers to boost performance and reliability.
· Work with cross-functional teams to integrate vision systems with MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and perform functional checks.
· Lead the creation of project documentation, including technical specifications, drawings, test reports, and system designs.
· Ensure compliance with safety standards, automation codes, and industry regulations for machine vision and automation equipment.
· Provide mentorship to junior engineers and act as the go-to expert for all machine vision system-related matters.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
10 years in machine vision engineering, particularly in automation systems
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s Degree in electrical or mechatronics engineering, computer science, or similar field.
Desired: Master’s or higher in electrical or mechatronics engineering, computer science, or similar field

· Proven success integrating machine vision systems within broader automation processes and teams, ensuring cohesive operation.
· Embrace new challenges, learn new techniques, and surpass internal goals.
· Demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness allowing smooth adaptation to a constantly evolving environment and work priorities.
· Strong multitasking abilities, priority management, and a sense of urgency in meeting tight schedules
· Experience working in a fast-paced environment and able to work under pressure to meet project deadlines.
Specialized Skills
Required:
· Expertise in 2D/3D vision system design and development, with hands-on experience using industry-standard platforms (Cognex, Keyence) for automated inspection, robotic guidance, or quality control.
· Proficiency in developing vision algorithms using industry-standard vision platforms, including Cognex VPro, Keyence, SICK, Fanuc, Halcon, and Matrox.
· Proficient in vision system scripting and toolbox usage, with the ability to tweak parameters and optimize recognition scores.
· Ability to troubleshoot and optimize vision systems, handling variations in the process to improve accuracy and performance, with experience in developing machine learning models.
· Familiarity with automation equipment safety compliance, codes, and standards (e.g., SEMI, NFPA 79) and compliance requirements for integrated vision and robotics..
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create comprehensive project documentation and present technical findings.
· Advanced proficiency in PLC programming, with deep expertise in Allen-Bradley (Studio 5000), Siemens (TIA Portal), and other automation platforms.
· Proven track of record in leading complex projects, mentoring junior engineers, and driving continuous improvement in automation systems.
· Proven experience in manufacturing scale-up.
· Experience developing vision applications using programming languages such as C++, C#, Python, VB.
· Experience in designing and implementing Design of Experiments (DOEs) and test plans for manufacturing and control processes.
Desired:
· Experience in designing, developing, and integrating complex automation equipment beyond vision systems, incl controls and robotics.
· Advanced data analysis and machine learning skills.
· Experience in solid-state battery industry
Work Flexibility:
- Ability to maintain flexible work hours to account for time zone differences with Europe, when necessary.
- Overtime may be required to meet ramp-up deadlines.
- 10% Travel.
In San Jose, California, the salary range for this role is $135,000 – $202,000, depending on education and experience.
