About us The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has a clear mission - to grow the economy. Our role is to help businesses invest, grow and export to create jobs and opportunities right across the country. We do this in three ways.   Firstly, we help to build a strong, competitive business environment, where consumers are protected and companies rewarded for treating their employees properly.  Secondly, we open international markets and ensure resilient supply chains. This can be through Free Trade Agreements, trade facilitation and multilateral agreements. Finally, we work in partnership with businesses every day, providing advance, finance and deal-making support to those looking to start up, invest, export and grow.  The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) directorate develops and operates tools and services to support us in this mission. The team have been nominated three times in a row for ‘Best Public Sector Employer’ at the Women in Tech awards!   About the RoleJoin Department for Business and Trade (DBT) as a G7 Senior Data Analyst and help us transform DBT into an insight-driven organisation that tells compelling stories with its data. You will be based within a Digital, Data, and Technology (DDaT) team of data analysts who do and facilitate analysis with users across the department. We work alongside a multidisciplinary team who are responsible for developing our data and insight platform, Data Workspace. The platform gives our staff access to a large catalogue of data and a suite of user-friendly and secure tools to analyse it.  Our team uses Data Workspace and supports its users by monitoring and improving data quality, onboarding new datasets, helping other colleagues use analytical tools such as SQL, R, Python, and QuickSight, reviewing custom data visualisations designed by DBT staff, and creating analytical dashboards ourselves. Our team members are supported and encouraged to become expert users of a wide range of analysis tools to assist DBT colleagues and contribute to the department’s data-informed insights and strategic decisions. This is a role at the heart of analysis and data in DBT, that stretches across different workstreams. About you The ideal candidate will have a passion for solving real-world problems using data and enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team to deliver results. They will be an effective and collaborative analyst, and a great communicator.    Responsibilities  You will be an experienced Data Analyst who can:  
  • Work in an Agile team and independently to deliver data analysis projects. You will collaborate with colleagues across the business to identify, understand and communicate data insights that add the most value and contribute to efficiencies, productivity and growth in their area.  
  • Apply tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation, working across a broad range of areas such as business intelligence, data assurance and quality, and by following cross-governmental and departmental data governance policies and data ethics standards.  
  • Produce compelling analysis and visualisation of data (e.g., dashboards) to provide actionable insights to technical, policy and operational colleagues.  
  • Develop a deep understanding of the systems we use to organise and store data, identifying and assessing new data sources, and investigating and resolving problems as they occur. Use these to manage and maintain data, ensuring it aligns to DBT’s data standards, is protected, and used in line with established governance.  
  • Have enthusiasm for helping colleagues to get the maximum value from data. To enable this, you will take a proactive approach to developing your skills and sharing them with others. As part of this you will design and facilitate training for others across the department in the usage of our data analysis tools and you will lead other members of your team by example. 
 Essential Skills and Experience  
  • Experienced in communicating to technical and non-technical audiences with the ability to listen and interpret the needs of technical and non-technical audiences. You will be experienced in establishing effective relationships with stakeholders who have different positions and hold different perspectives. 
  • The ability to select and tailor a variety of data visualisation methods with solid experience with dashboarding tools such as AWS QuickSight, Tableau or PowerBI, and at least one of the code-based approaches such as R Shiny or Python Streamlit. 
  • Experienced in coaching and mentoring junior colleagues and staff on all aspects of data analysis and visualisation 
  • Extensive experience in programming languages such as SQL, Python or R. 
  • Strong background in creating and maintaining data management, governance policies and standards alongside data quality assurance and validation. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse colleagues, planning, overseeing and supporting teams to deliver high quality analytical work.   
Desirable Skills and Experience  
  • Exposure across aspects of statistical methods and data analysis  
  • Experience in using programming languages and statistical methods to interpret data to recommend and implement data-informed actions

 As part of the ‘Data quality assurance, validation, and data linkage’ and ‘Statistical methods and data analysis’ capabilities, we will be assessing your SQL knowledge in the interview. This will not be specific to any one tool/database, and you will not be required to do any work outside of the interview related to this.  How we offer Offers will be made in merit order based on location preferences. If you pass the bar at interview but are not the highest scoring you will be held on a 12-month reserve list in case a role becomes available. If you are judged a near miss at interview, you may be offered a post at the grade below the one you applied for.  This role requires SC clearance. DBT’s requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years. Failure to meet this requirement will result in your application being rejected and your offer will be withdrawn. Checks will also be made against: 
  • departmental or company records (personnel files, staff reports, sick leave reports and security records) 
  • UK criminal records covering both spent and unspent criminal records

 More about us This role can only be worked from within the UK, not overseas. If you are based in London, you will receive London weighting.
