About the role

The Principal BI Engineer will take end to end ownership of complex data engineering, reporting and visualisation projects, working individually and supervising the work of more junior colleagues. You will work independently and with initiative to manage complexity in stakeholder management, business processes, and solution building to deliver high quality reporting solutions, including vital data pipeline and data model builds.

You will also partner with the BI Manager in developing team best practice, governance, ‘ways of working’ and technical proficiency. You will supervise the work of junior colleagues and will be called upon to represent the BI Manager on occasion. You will enable colleagues across all business areas to make key business decisions by delivery high quality reports built on trusted data models and pipelines.

About You

  • Lead high-profile stakeholder engagements to deliver individual reports or reporting suites.
  • Build trusted data models to support reporting projects including understanding data sources, writing complex SQL ETL processes, and creating and populating data models.
  • Design and build reports using advanced reporting / visualisation tools.
  • Work with the Service Delivery Team to implement ETL processes, data models and reports into production, and, when necessary, solve any post implementation issues.
  • Conform to the BI governance framework in all data engineering and report building tasks
  • Supervise the work of junior colleagues in delivering ETL / reporting solutions and be an example / mentor to them
  • Potentially line-manage more junior colleagues as warranted by team size.
  • Work with colleagues in the wider tech team as needed to implement solutions.
  • Partner with the BI Manager in developing team best practice, governance, “ways of working” and technical proficiency.
  • Take a lead role in cross tribe initiatives that impact the BI Team and otherwise represent the BI Manager when necessary.
  • Excellent understanding of data modelling concepts / best practice and extensive experience of writing complex SQL ETL processes from scratch.
  • Excellent level of proficiency using Power BI and understanding of best practice with experience in developing and managing large semantic models.
  • Excellent level of proficiency in data visualisation and report design.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and extensive experience of managing stakeholders through the report development life cycle.
  • Experience in leading complex projects, either in regard to stakeholder management, business processes, or technical details, with the ability to deliver value quickly and iteratively.
  • Experiencing in leading / coaching junior colleagues.
  • Excellent numeracy and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent commercial awareness
