Company Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Data Engineering who will Improve the data foundation by integrating data from different platforms into various automated reports, harnessing the value of HME engineering data for maintenance planning, asset management, and overall reliability improvement for the Northern Cape mines.

Kumba Iron Ore               

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Centurion, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As our Specialist Data Engineering some of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Safety, Health, and Environment
    • Adhere to all health and safety practices and requirements.
    • Support good housekeeping in the broader department and on-site.
    • Participate in safety initiatives (e.g., VFLs) as required.
    • Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Data Architecture Design:
    • Design and implement robust data architectures that support the storage, processing, and retrieval of engineering reliability data.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data requirements and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Data Modelling:
    • Develop and implement data models that represent the structure and relationships of engineering data.
    • Optimize data models for performance, scalability, and ease of use.
  • Data Integration:
    • Integrate data from various sources, including sensors, equipment, and other systems, to create a unified and comprehensive view of engineering reliability data.
    • Implement Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to ensure data consistency and accuracy.

  • Database Management:
    • Manage databases used for storing engineering reliability data.
    • Implement and optimise database structures, indexes, and queries for efficient data retrieval.
  • Data Quality Assurance:
    • Implement and enforce data quality standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of engineering data.
    • Develop and execute data validation processes to identify and address inconsistencies or errors.
  • Real-time Data Processing:
    • Implement solutions for real-time data processing, especially for monitoring and analysing real-time data from sensors and equipment.
    • Ensure timely and accurate data updates to support engineering reliability monitoring and decision-making.
  • Data Security and Compliance:
    • Implement security measures to safeguard engineering reliability data.
    • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and industry standards.
  • Collaboration with Data Scientists and Analysts:
    • Work closely with data scientists and analysts to understand their data requirements and provide the necessary infrastructure for advanced analytics and modelling.
  • Scalability and Performance Optimization:
    • Optimize data infrastructure for scalability to handle growing volumes of engineering data.
    • Continuously monitor and improve the performance of data processing and retrieval.
  • Documentation:
    • Create and maintain documentation for data architecture, processes, and models.
    • Provide documentation that facilitates other team members' understanding and use of engineering reliability data.
  • Continuous Learning:
    • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering.
    • Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance the data engineering capabilities within the Engineering Reliability function.

This role is in the Engineering & Maintenance HME/Plant (ENG) department on a band 6.12 level reporting to the Section Manager Reliability

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree/Bachelor of Technology in a relevant field such as Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or Business Information/ Systems Engineering 
  • SAP Certified Application Associate), Oracle (Oracle Certified Associate), Microsoft Dynamics, or other relevant ERP platforms
  • SA Drivers License

Technical Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of Database Management Systems (DBMS) and their management, with 6-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of principles behind Data Modeling and Architecture.
  • Profound knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) Processes.
  • Familiarity with Programming and Scripting Languages in the context of database management.
  • Thorough understanding of Big Data Technologies.
  • Extensive experience in Real-time Data Processing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Data Quality and Governance.
  • In-depth understanding of Security and Compliance measures in the context of database management.
  • Familiarity with Cloud Computing as it pertains to database management.
  • Advanced understanding and application of Computer Literacy, including MS Office, Projects, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven experience in identifying and implementing business and strategic improvement opportunities and projects related to database management in mining operations.
  • Application of Project management fundamentals in the context of database management.
  • Thorough understanding of change management methodologies.
