Lead Data Engineer
£60,000 to £80,000 plus great benefits (Work Level 5)
24-month fixed-term contract
Manchester City Centre (Hybrid)

We’re open to applications from people who may require flexible working arrangements. There’ll be an opportunity to discuss your flexible working requirements during the interview process, and at offer stage.

We’re looking for a Lead Data Engineer to join our Data Enablement team, within our wider Digital Technology & Data team, on a 24-month fixed-term contract in Manchester. In this role, you’ll help us to build modern data platforms; using tools like Python, Databricks, and Kimball Data Modelling to lead on the design and delivery of innovative data solutions.

As a Lead Data Engineer, you’ll collaborate with a range of teams including Data Science, Analytics, Insight, Governance, and Business Intelligence. We’ll look to you to lead a team of Data Engineers and use your strong technical experience to help us innovate and explore opportunities to improve the work we do. We’re at the forefront of data technology here at Co-op, and this is a great opportunity to be part of our journey. This is a hybrid role, with occasional in-person team meetings in the office (find out more about our hybrid working policy at https://jobs.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).

What you’ll do

  • Lead on the design and delivery of data solutions to support decision-making across Co-op
  • Manage and optimise our development, testing, deployment, and release processes
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the wider business to understand their data needs
  • Coach, mentor, and support your team of Data Engineers in their development
  • Work alongside colleagues in our data leadership team to find and explore improvement opportunities
  • Work with our Delivery colleagues to provide project timeline estimations based on available resources and capacity in the team

This role would suit people who have

  • Experience leading a team within a modern cloud environment (or previous experience as a Senior Data Engineer with a desire to step into a leadership role)
  • Experience coding using PySpark, SQL, and Python
  • Experience with data vault and/or Kimball data modelling
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical information to a non-technical audience

We know that some candidates are less likely to apply for a role if they don’t meet all the criteria in the job description. At Co-op, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive working environment, so if you'd like to apply for this role but your experience doesn't quite meet every point, we'd still encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or other roles we have available.

Why Co-op?

If you’ve got the skills and experience we’re looking for, we can offer you a competitive salary and great benefits package which includes 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (as well as other discounts on Co-op products and services). You’ll also get:

  • Private healthcare
  • An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
  • 28 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
  • Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
  • Coaching and training to support your career development
  • Wagestream – a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
  • Grocery Aid – 24/7 access to a range of emotional, financial, and practical support services for you and your family

If we invite you to take part in the recruitment process for any of our jobs, we’ll ask you if you need any reasonable adjustments to enable you to participate.
