Job Summary  

With the NHL's data revolution through puck and player tracking, we have a unique opportunity to shape an ongoing paradigm shift. We are seeking a seasoned Director of DevOps & Data Engineering to lead and make a significant impact at VSG & The Tampa Bay Lightning as we pioneer new directions and initiatives. 

 

Your primary objective will be to oversee the design, development, and maintenance of data-driven systems across cloud infrastructure. Your role will involve strategic planning, architecture design, deployment, and reporting. You will identify and address pain points while evolving our technical solutions to be cloud-native. In this leadership role, you will engage with stakeholders and be deeply involved in design, deployment, and maintenance cycles. Collaborating closely with the members of your technical team and key business stakeholders, you will provide strategic direction and ensure that our team delivers outstanding results while staying ahead of the competition. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Develop a robust data management platform to enable real-time, high-scale, highly secure, highly reliable, self-service predictive analytics actions and insights. 

  • Ensure robust data governance and compliance by implementing data security, privacy protocols, and regulatory frameworks to safeguard sensitive information while maintaining data quality and integrity. 

  • Foster cross-functional collaboration, bridging technical and business teams to align objectives and deliver impactful solutions.  

  • Oversee the design, development, maintenance, and optimization of data pipelines from multiple sources into a data warehouse/data lake. 

  • Engage with stakeholders to understand their needs and provide technical solutions. 

  • Shape and implement strategic cloud infrastructure and data warehousing strategies to support future growth and dynamic business needs. 

  • Drive continuous improvement in DevOps practices, optimizing CI/CD pipelines and automation workflows to enable efficient deployment and real-time monitoring of data-driven applications. 

Supervisory & Management Responsibilities 

  • Lead and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of continuous learning, technical excellence, and collaboration across departments.

Qualifications 

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, software development, or a related field. 

  • Extensive knowledge of data warehousing techniques and methodologies (e.g., Kimball vs Inmon, DCC). 

  • In-depth understanding of SQL/noSQL and data warehouse solutions (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift). 

  • Strong experience with AWS (e.g., EC2/ECS, S3, CloudFront) or comparable cloud services (e.g., GCP, Azure).P

  • Proficiency in DevOps tools and methodologies, including containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD, and orchestration (e.g., Airflow, Dagster). 

  • Proven experience in building and managing ETL/ELT pipelines. 

  • Expertise in Linux, command-line interfaces (CLI), and Git. 

  • Demonstrated growth mindset and passionate curiosity. 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a Master’s degree in Business Administration a plus. 

  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a strategic mindset. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. 

  • Proven track record of driving innovation and delivering high-quality results. 

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop talent building a culture of growth and accountability. 

Working Conditions 

  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in office and arena environment that can be exciting, loud and distracting  

  • This is an onsite role; flexibility to work a minority of time remotely.  

  • Ability to work extended hours including late nights, holidays, and weekends as needed  

  • Ability to work prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.  

  • Ability to lift/carry/move up to 10lbs 

  • Ability to work in cold/hot indoor and outdoor temperatures  

  • Ability to work in areas that can become crowded with equipment and/or people  

  • Ability to move comfortable throughout the arena with minimal accommodations  

  • Ability to work comfortable around special effects including, but not limited to: haze, strobe lights, lasers, etc
