Our Network Timetabling & Planning department are responsible for the strategic planning for and assurance of future network states (including timetables and infrastructure) and the end-to-end timetable (including the Master Timetable, Special Events and Occupation planning).

About the role
This role is a 20month Max Term Contract.
The role of the Senior Rail Operations and Modelling Specialist is to drive the evidence-based decision making for Metro’s strategy and business planning. The position is a key role in planning the future network service requirements, driving the network’s master timetables and responding to disruption on the network to ensure ongoing, high-quality delivery to our passengers.
The role will advise stakeholders on operational requirements and likely impacts of future project changes, implications of demand trends and performance impacts of growth, passenger, timetable capacity and performance impacts of planned network occupations and network changes. More role responsibilities also include:
- Build and use data models to determine impacts and risks to network resulting from events on the network, such as occupations, timetable changes, rerouting events and changes to the network configuration.
- Develop data tools and business processes to support streamlining rail operations model preparation, validation, reporting, and effective system interfacing (for upstream and downstream systems),
- Lead the development of timetable concepts in RailSys to demonstrate and advise on operational requirements and to meet passenger outcomes.
- Lead the passenger modelling to determine the impact of major network changes on passenger loads and flows and assess impacts of proposed major occupations.
- Work with key Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) stakeholders and performance teams, both internal and external, to validate performance impacts, timetable analytical evaluation tools and support their ongoing development, ensuring alignment between divisions on the performance impacts.
- Analyse and maintain data from various sources; draw inferences; prepare reports; and communicate recommendations to assist the operational and planning areas of MTM and other stakeholders.
About You:
- Proven experience in undertaking complex data preparation, analysis, visualisation, reviewing, testing, interpreting, and drawing inferences from complex data and presenting results in a clear and comprehensible manner to various stakeholder levels both internally and externally.
- Proven experience in transport modelling in RailSys.
- A detailed understanding of Melbourne’s metropolitan rail system.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with tools in a modern analysis pipeline, in particular, a programming language (Python, R etc), a querying language (SQL, DAX etc), a visualisation tool (PowerBi/Tableau) and Excel.
- Sound conceptual and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, prioritise and understand important issues to provide sound advice on complex issues for business improvement with the ability to adhere to strict deadlines and work schedules.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff (verbal and written).
- An appropriate tertiary qualification in mathematics, engineering, econometrics, data science or similar/equivalent numerate discipline is preferred.
