Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin, TX or Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.

The Role
As a Data Engineer, you will build industrialized data assets and optimize data pipelines in support of Business Intelligence and Advance Analytic objectives. You will work closely with our forward-thinking Data Scientists, BI Developers, System Architects and Data Architects to deliver value to our vision for the future.  This role will be in the Intelligent Manufacturing organization under Data Engineering Software.  The Intelligent Manufacturing teams are responsible for ideating, incubating, and delivering new plant data solutions for General Motors GPSC and Manufacturing and our partners. We integrate with business and information technology teams to develop leading edge real-time solutions that use our plant floor and procurement data to improve procurement decision making, plant asset maintenance, plant floor decision making and plant floor safety.  Our team includes best-in-industry engineers, architects, and IT professionals who have an ambition to move at lightning speed, deliver world-class solutions, and deliver high-quality, innovative decision-making solutions that drives value for our customers. The Data Engineer is responsible for leading and delivering new and innovative data driven solutions that are elegant and professional.  Our team focuses on writing maintainable tests and code that meet the customer’s need and scale without rework.  Our engineers work in highly collaborative environments across many disciplines (database, streaming technology, custom rules engines).  We work on cutting edge technologies – understanding and inventing new designs and integration patterns along the way

What You'll Do

  • You will assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements
  • You will identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Lead and deliver exceptional data driven solutions across many different languages, tools and technology 
  • Develop a culture which takes challenging and complex ideas and turns them into production solutions 
  • Have a broad, enterprise-wide view of business and varying degrees of appreciating for strategy, process, capabilities, enablers, and governance 
  • Be able to critically apply themselves to solving problems in an interconnected and integrated environment 
  • Think strategically about adopting new technologies that are beyond the horizon and deliver on sound solution design 
  • Create high-level models that can be used in future analysis to extend and mature the business architecture. 
  • Working towards continuously raising our standards of engineering excellence in quality, efficiency, and developing repeatable designs.
  • Performing hands-on development, leading code reviews and testing, creating automation tools, and creating proofs of concepts
  • Ability to work along with operations team during any production issues related to platform
  • Best practices like agile methodologies, design thinking and continuous deployment that will allow you to innovate fast
  • Deliver solutions across Big Data applications to support business strategies and deliver business value.
  • Build tool / automation to make deployment and monitoring production environment more repeatable
  • Build strong relationships with Business & Technology Partners and provide leadership, direction, best practices, and coaching to technology development teams
  • Owning all Technical aspects of development and for assigned applications
  • Driving continuous improvement in applications, through use of consistent development practices and tools, and through ongoing design and code refactoring
  • Collaborating with stakeholders through ongoing product and platform releases, to solve existing needs, identify exciting opportunities, and predict future challenges
  • Working closely with product managers and Program Manager to prioritize and manage features, technical requirements, known defects, and issues
  • Managing and appropriately escalating delivery impediments, risks, issues, and changes tied to the product development initiatives
  • Mentoring other engineers, and educating colleagues on industry trends and new technologies
  • Data Integration – Design and develop new source system integrations from a variety of formats including files, database extracts and APIs
  • Data Pipelines – Design and develop highly scalable Data Pipelines that incorporate complex transformations and efficient code
  • Data Delivery – Design and develop solutions for delivering data that meets SLAs.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or Software/Systems Engineering degree preferred
  • 7-10 years of data engineering/development experience.
  • Strong experience as a Senior Developer with expertise in data quality frameworks and pipeline architectures.
  • Demonstrated experience in Microservices, Data Streaming, Big Data, Cloud solution architectures required
  • Experience with Azure (preferred) or AWS cloud platform for data processing and storage.
  • Hands-on expertise with AWS/Azure/GCP/Kubernetes and/or Azure or AWS Cloud platforms for data processing and storage
  • Exposure to software defined networking, zero trust security models, micro segmentation and second layer of defense technologies
  • Working knowledge of most common protocols HTTPS
  • Working knowledge of Open API and OAuth
  • Deep understanding and experience of big data technologies Hadoop, Hive, HBase, Spark, Object Storage (ADLS/S3), Event Queues
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation experience of Data Streaming architectures and design principles
  • Hands on Experience with stream processing in Kubernetes
  • Hands on experience with Elastic search and Kafka Ecosystem

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or Software/Systems Engineering degree preferred

Compensation: 

  • The expected base compensation for this role is: $94,800- $176,100. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position. 
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
