Job Description

The Director of Commercial Data Management reports to the Senior Director of Commercial Operations in the North America Global Insights, Analytics, and Commercial Operations (GIACO) organization. The Director, Commercial Data Management is responsible for shaping, creating and executing the Commercial Data Management strategy and capabilities to support all existing and new therapeutic areas for North America GIACO including the leadership and oversight of the Master Data Management (MDM) and Commercial Data Warehouse systems. 

This role will have the opportunity to develop and build the tools, systems, capabilities and overall infrastructure of Vertex’s Commercial data warehouse and datasets. This includes but is not limited to leading the acquisition, building, integration, stewardship, and governance of all commercial datasets to enable commercial insights and reporting (both strategic and tactical execution) as well as, the identification of business requirements, development of project scopes, identification of important vendors, datasets, data warehouse architecture, and resources.  This position will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support the implementation of data infrastructure for the Commercial Organization and guarantee adequate access to and visibility of internal and external vendor data required to support the business.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Setting strategic direction and continuing to drive innovation and industry best practices in Vertex Commercial Data Management for existing and new disease areas.
  • Leading and supporting a team of FTEs, data stewards, vendors, and contractors.
  • Owning Vertex’s Customer Master Data Management (MDM) operational processes to ensure high quality data delivery in alignment with business stakeholders and downstream system requirements.
  • Managing data-related budgets, contracts, and invoicing for data acquisitions and services provided for Commercial Data Management.
  • Supporting and enforcing compliance with Vertex’s data privacy and security policies.
  • Identifying, assessing, and acquiring third party data sources (e.g., IQVIA, Symphony, Definitive Healthcare, Clarivate, etc.) to provide the most appropriate data required to support and inform commercial business decisions. Act as the subject matter expert on these data sources.
  • Working in close partnership with Vertex’s IT group to execute technology initiatives.
  • Working with, and directing the activities of, vendor organizations that support Vertex’s data management capabilities.
  • Ensuring Data Quality across all data sets including proper application of business rules & DQ checks. 
  • Developing KPIs to measure value and track performance of data management initiatives.
  • Developing SOPs and systems to ensure that reporting, storage, and handling of data sources meet compliance requirements.
  • In partnership with IT and other stakeholders, leading the commercial data governance process.
  • Developing and maintaining data catalogues and libraries for all relevant data sources (with Collibra and other tools).
  • Supporting integrations with CRM systems, MDM systems, the Commercial Data Warehouse, Customer Data Platforms, and other sources of customer or sales data.
  • Training internal teams on data management-related processes and procedures.

Required Skills:

  • Deep experience with advanced data technologies, including data warehousing, data lakes, cloud platforms, and data analytics software.
  • Strong understanding and experience working with specialty pharmacy data (i.e., dispense, status, etc.), syndicated data (i.e., Claims, Rx), and Master Data Management data sets.
  • Knowledge and experience supporting system integrations and end-user applications related to the usage of Commercial Data (i.e. DCR processes, field reporting, and Incentive Compensation).
  • Knowledgeable in the principles of data governance and date stewardship (data quality).
  • Advanced understanding of Data systems and tools (Data Warehouse, ETL, BI platforms).
  • Strong vendor management skills to enforce SLAs based on data quality performance.
  • Strong business insight and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to translate complex problems clearly and in non-technical terms.
  • Experience across product life cycle (emerging, launch, in-line, mature).
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and external stakeholder engagement abilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, with advanced degree preferred, in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Operations Research, or Science-related field.
  • 10+ years of demonstrated experience in Data Strategy, Data Analytics or Data Management, with a proven track record of strategic planning and operational execution.
  • 7+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical or healthcare sectors, with extensive knowledge of, and expertise with, common external sources of pharmaceutical data including sales, claims, HCP/customer, hospital, etc.
  • Experienced in pharmaceutical master data management (MDM) processes and systems, with focus on industry-best practices for system integrations, data stewardship, data quality, and field force adoption.
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining a high-quality operational framework including SOPs and Work Instructions to ensure that reporting, storage, and handling of data sources meet compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with databases/data warehouses (Oracle/Snowflake), CRM systems (Veeva/Salesforce), reporting/query tools (SQL, Tableau/Power BI), project planning, agile methodologies (JIRA/ServiceNow), and performance metrics and reporting.
  • Experience with data governance, data stewardship, data catalogues (such as Collibra), and managing data vendors.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills along with strong relationship-building and cross-functional collaboration to ensure high levels of customer service, team engagement, career development and a consultative, problem-solving mindset.

Pay Range:

$184,000 - $276,000

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
