Reporting to the Manager of Data Science Development, the Data Scientist II is an individual contributor role in the Data Science & AI Department on the Data Science Development team. This strong critical thinker and problem solver is expected to be capable of working autonomously on tasks and components of projects and professionally mentor other teammates, as applicable, but does not have direct oversight over other associates or projects. They will work under the guidance of other senior data scientists and collaborate cross-functionally to extract and analyze data and contribute to business problem solutions using data science analysis, coding, technical tools, and automation techniques.

Role qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in (CS, Math, Data Science, Engineering, or other quantitative field) + 2 yrs work experience, or computational MS degree with some hands-on project/solutioning experience, or overall equivalent length of requisite work experience in lieu of a degree.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Python and SQL programming.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Python visualization libraries, Qlik, Tableau, Power BI, etc.
- Solid understanding of statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and machine-learning techniques/approaches and algorithms.
- Ability to explore and manipulate large, complex data sets and extract value from them using ETL and ad-hoc scripting skills.
- A creative mind with proven critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that reliably demonstrates attention to details and accuracy in execution.
- Ability to quickly learn and skill-up with unfamiliar data and/or products.
- Ability to thrive in both collaborative and independent work environments.
- Autonomous worker, able to break down small user stories into tasks and drive work to completion.
- Communication skills to summarize, interpret, and present data-derived insights to peers.
Nice to have:
- Experience working with large scale healthcare claims and/or clinical data.
- Familiar with healthcare data standards.
- Proven experience creating and communicating insights from data visualizations using tools such as Python, Tableau, Qlik, etc.
- Experience developing and maintaining code following git source-control, linting, and peer review processes.
- Experience with (preferably) AWS or another public Cloud Platform services and tools.
- Experience working in an “Agile” and/or “Scrum” development environment using tools such as JIRA.
What you will be doing:
- Extract and manipulate large data sets, leveraging tools including Python, PySPark, and SQL.
- Perform data mining and exploratory data analysis to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in large healthcare data sets using tools such as Python, PySPark, and SQL.
- Conduct research and collaborate with other team members to understand requirements and then build analytical and data-driven solutions that support project objectives.
- Develop and apply statistical, logical, and/or machine-learning-based data science algorithms to support project efforts, using the appropriate methodology for the task.
- Identify and engineer relevant features from raw data to improve model or algorithm performance, accuracy, or predictive power.
- Collaborate with data engineers and subject-matter experts to ensure the availability and quality of data required for analysis and modeling.
- Write code and unit tests in both exploratory and production coding environments and contribute to team code review for production-worthy software solutions and/or Cloud IaC solution components.
- Contribute to ML- and Product Ops activities by implementing and maintaining feedback, monitoring, and other solution maintenance metrics.
- Support reporting and results communication by utilizing visualization tools to present data in a compelling and intuitive manner.
- Identify areas where automation could increase team efficiency and independently design and implement useful automated solutions.
- Work closely with teammates to understand business problems and to develop data-driven solutions by translating business requirements into technical concepts.
- Document methodologies, assumptions, and results of analyses and other work efforts to ensure reproducibility and maintain a robust knowledge base.
- Prepare reports and present findings and recommendations to the team.
- Practice fastidiousness and self-awareness toward task completion and time management work effort to meet project deadlines.

- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior associates, modeling effective working relationships and solution-building that demonstrates team and Availity culture and values.
