Regulatory Affairs Leader for Autonomous Systems

Global Safety & Regulatory Affairs is looking for a leader of Regulatory Affairs for Autonomous Systems (Level L) who will work across the Enterprise to leverage existing capabilities and to coordinate regulatory and engagement efforts to foster the safe integration of autonomous systems into the national airspace. This role, based in Arlington, VA, is critical to evolving and normalizing the transportation ecosystem in close collaboration with the Government Operations, business units, subsidiaries and Boeing’s partners to support autonomous flight.

Position Overview:

The position is responsible for leading and executing ongoing technical, safety, and regulatory developments and initiatives of significance to the company across the appropriate Boeing enterprise teams and with regulators, policy makers, industry and trade associations.

A successful candidate must have a demonstrated ability to lead with speed and agility, to address the complexity of technical, economic, political, and regulatory issues associated with emerging Autonomous Systems and airspace management technologies, build and leverage close working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, especially the Federal Aviation Administration, and collaborate with Boeing Autonomous Systems community.

The position represents Engineering in the Boeing Government Operations organization and has responsibility for representing Boeing business interests on technical, regulatory and policy issues primarily within the United States government.  However, this role is also called upon to engage globally as needed and promote globally harmonized advancements to support this sector of aerospace.  Significant external engagements with regulators, trade associations and other manufacturers demands excellent communication skills.

The position is responsible for participating in the development and execution of Boeing strategy in the following areas:

  • Coordination, alignment and internal collaboration of autonomous systems regulatory activities across the Boeing Enterprise, including BCA, BDS, BR&T, Wisk, SkyGrid and more.

  • Articulation and support of internal Boeing Enterprise interactions with regulators.

  • Development, coordination and consolidation of the assessments of external competitive and regulatory landscape.

  • External interface with trade organizations to ensure Boeing product success.

  • Engagement with FAA and other global regulatory agencies to ensure regulatory support for current and upcoming Boeing programs.

  • Assist representatives in enabling, supporting, and advocating for Boeing Autonomous Systems interests throughout the regulatory development lifecycle including ICAO, FAA, EASA, JARUS, RTCA and EUROCAE.

  • Identifying and tracking of Boeing risks, gaps, and/or regulatory roadblocks and any support in the development of ameliorating or mitigation strategies.

  • Support the development of Boeing Enterprise strategy inputs to Autonomous Systems Airspace Integration.

Work Authorization:

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options (Arlington, VA).

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.

  • 10+ years of experience assisting in any of the following engineering areas: analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification or product assurance or any other specialties engineering discipline.

  • 3+ years of experience in leading and partnering with cross-functional teams, involving key stakeholder relationship management.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience using excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with leaders and colleagues in an engineering environment

  • 3+ years of experience coordinating with the FAA or international regulatory authorities                                    

  • 1+ years of experience in supporting Autonomous Systems

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

  • $166,600 – $225,400
