Senior Staff Forward Deployed AI Engineer

The Opportunity

As a Forward Deployed AI Engineer on our newly formed Field Engineering team, you’ll work directly with enterprise customers on high-impact projects that leverage Generative AI, LLMs, and modern application development. You’ll be hands-on in helping organizations migrate legacy databases, modernize their architecture, and integrate AI-driven functionality into their applications. This is a rare opportunity to apply your software engineering expertise while driving AI adoption across industries. You’ll not only solve challenging, real-world engineering problems, but also influence MongoDB’s AI strategy and product direction.

This role can be based out of our Sydney/Melbourne office or remotely in Australia.

What You’ll Do

• Work with enterprise customers to refactor applications, migrate legacy databases, and optimize performance using MongoDB
• Prototype and build AI-powered features, leveraging LLMs and Generative AI frameworks to improve software development workflows and application functionality
• Apply modern software engineering practices to accelerate customers’ AI adoption, helping them implement microservices-based architectures, intelligent automation, and AI-enhanced applications
• Influence MongoDB’s AI and software development roadmap by sharing insights from real-world implementations and customer needs
• Collaborate across engineering, product, and customer teams to create scalable, resilient software solutions

What We’re Looking For

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of delivering impactful technical solutions for enterprise clients, using Java, Python, and SQL
• An engineering degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Network Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
• Deep expertise in AI  concepts, Generative AI (e.g., LLMs, fine-tuning, embeddings), and open-source AI development
• Experience designing and implementing AI-powered applications, AI-driven data migration, or intelligent automation is highly preferred
• Proficient in test-driven development methodologies and familiar with monolithic vs. microservices architectures, including database migration and refactoring
• Exceptional problem-solving skills and a passion for solving complex, large-scale engineering challenges by leveraging GenAI
• Preferred qualifications: Preferred qualifications: Academic research experience in parsing, AI/ML, or programming languages
