Our program is highly selective, hosting only a handful of interns each year, ensuring personalized attention and ample opportunities to work closely with BlueHalo team members. This 3-month remote summer student internship opportunity will support the Optoelectronic Device and Materials Research Group within the Material and Manufacturing Directorate (RXEE) of the Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) as part of the Biological, Electronic, and Nanoscale Department of the BlueHalo Air Force Business Unit. This position will require working with government customers at AFRL to perform simulations of optical materials and photonic design using software tools. A background and understanding of condense matter physics is required with ability to leverage AI/ML techniques.
Tasks:
- Building and utilizing crystal models to develop synthetic data sets
- Utilizing synthetic data sets to optimize materials performance through machine learning
- Develop optimized couplers for integrated photonics using inverse design
Skills:
- Condensed matter theory understanding
- Ability to use FDTD or similar modeling capability
- Inverse design or AI/ML techniques (likely python-based) for design optimization
Eligibility
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Status of rising Junior, Senior, or Graduate level student
- Due to the nature of this position, U.S. Citizenship is required
